Out today in @Nature! I am thrilled to share our work on the PARIS immune system in its final published form. Huge thanks to my mentor, Kevin Corbett @_KevinCorbett, and my teammates. See the thread below in comment section for a quick summary! nature.com/articles/s4158…
TIL that E. coli K12 — the most widely used strain of bacterium for biological research — is named "K-12" because it was first isolated from a diphtheria patient staying in room K-12 of a Stanford University hospital in 1922. Naming conventions in biology are weird!
We discovered a new immune signaling molecule: N7-cADPR N7-cADPR is produced by phage-stimulated TIR proteins. It activates a bacterial caspase, which then degrades essential proteins to curb infection Preprint: biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… Congrats @FrancoisRousset & @IlyaOsterman
I am excited to share our work "Systematic discovery of antibacterial and antifungal bacterial toxins" that is published in @NatureMicrobiol nature.com/articles/s4156…
OUT NOW in @Nature: A bacterial immunity protein directly senses two disparate phage proteins By Tong Zhang, Abel Garcia-Pino, Michael Laub & colleagues. @michael_laub8 nature.com/articles/s4158…
Super proud of this work and envision it will be useful to many #teamtomo @lindsey__young led a great collaboration with Michael Rosen and Antonio Giraldez x.com/biorxiv_biophy…
@lindsey__young and I are giddy for #teamtomo seeing what's coming up soon in @biorxiv! #submissionbeer
🦠🧬Our paper is live @CellCellPress: Genome integrity sensing by the broad-spectrum Hachiman antiphage defense complex authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S00… Through structural, genetic and microbiological approaches, we show that Hachiman degrades DNA… by sensing low integrity DNA.
A man with a heart of gold. Sir, you will forever be remembered as someone who truly cared and lived his life to make everyone else’s better.
Excited to be featured in a childhood favourite @TinkleMagazine! Thanks to @NCBS_Bangalore communications team for this super fun initiative.

Excited to share our preprint on the structure of human lysosomal transceptor GPR155, revealing its ability to transport auxin. Fantastic collaboration with Shikha Singh @ShikhaS4858 and a great achievement by a Ph.D. student Mansi Sharma @Mansi_Sharma9 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Thrilled to put this super exciting story, on GPR155, together with @AppuKSingh_IITK, @Mansi_Sharma9 and rest of the twitterless team members. Thanks to @THSTIFaridabad and @serbonline (#ANRF) for funding and support

Our paper out today @nature: phages reconstitute NAD+ to counter bacterial immunity Phaged invented a new biochemical pathway for NAD+ synthesis - including previously unknown enzymatic reactions - to evade bacterial defenses Congrats @IlyaOsterman! nature.com/articles/s4158…
Happy to have been a part of this discovery of a new human NADase, spearheaded by our amazing collaborators! Read on if you are into evolution of defense genes, TLR signaling, enzymes, and innate immunity. Stay tuned for more to come!
In a new study, we report the discovery of a human homolog of SIR2 antiphage proteins that participates in the TLR pathway of mammalian innate immunity!! Co-led with @EnzoZ_P lab, in collab with @morehouse_ben biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
From bacteria to human immunity! On our quest to idendify eukaryotic homologs of antiphage systems, we discovered a family of SIR2 immune proteins widespread in eukaryotes. We show that a human homolog, SIRanc, is a novel actor of the TLR pathway. biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 🧵👇

Delighted to share this new preprint from Anjana Badrinarayanan @anjbadri lab. By assessing replication dynamics at the level of single cells, we reveal the intricate relationship between nutrient status and rates of genome duplication in bacteria. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Excited to introduce AntiDefenseFinder - a free, open source tool that detects anti-defense systems in any genomic sequence. Available here to toggle on/off: defensefinder.mdmlab.fr. Read below for our insights into the >47K detectable systems📈 tiny.cc/8xrizz
How to repurpose a #tRNA enzyme into a global stress sensor? Co-led by @CharlesBNader, Swati Gaikwad, Soheila Bahmanjah, w/ Alan Hinnebusch lab, in @PNASNews, we describe how stress kinase Gcn2 adopts and molds Histidyl-tRNA synthetase as a regulatory hub. bit.ly/3YQbiMk
Excited to share our work in collaboration with @_KevinCorbett on detecting protein-RNA interactions with RNA-base editing in situ in fixed cells and primary tissues. Congratulations @Lisa_Liang13 and Tao in our lab! Thank you @czi for the support! nature.com/articles/s4146…
