TIL that E. coli K12 — the most widely used strain of bacterium for biological research — is named "K-12" because it was first isolated from a diphtheria patient staying in room K-12 of a Stanford University hospital in 1922. Naming conventions in biology are weird!

We discovered a new immune signaling molecule: N7-cADPR N7-cADPR is produced by phage-stimulated TIR proteins. It activates a bacterial caspase, which then degrades essential proteins to curb infection Preprint: biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… Congrats @FrancoisRousset & @IlyaOsterman

From bacteria to human immunity! On our quest to idendify eukaryotic homologs of antiphage systems, we discovered a family of SIR2 immune proteins widespread in eukaryotes. We show that a human homolog, SIRanc, is a novel actor of the TLR pathway. biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 🧵👇
