Doing a very rough analysis (very dirty data) of biopharmas with over $100m raised. This is what i’m getting and it seems very wrong. But maybe its my intuition that is off (?). Boston Metro: 183 companies Bay Area Metro: 102 companies San Diego Metro: 187 companies

Check out this cool work! Kudos to @ReikaWatanabe2 for leading the establishment of the #InSitu #cryoET pipeline at #LJI. She is such a powerhouse!

Our in-situ structural analysis of the Ebola virus nucleocapsid is now published in @CellCellPress! Using cryo-FIB-ET, we revealed a 9Å structure, identifying novel layers and conserved interfaces that may serve as antiviral targets. #Ebola #Virology #StructuralBiology

If you're an 80 year old Nobel Laureate and a postdoc or postdocs in your lab develop a new variation on single cell sequencing and publish it in @Nature , perhaps make one or more of them co-corresponding author.... just saying

Tiny gatekeepers of our nucleus decide what gets in and out. Follow our study on Yeast and Mammalian NPC baskets and unravel the molecular structure of these cellular bouncers! Don't miss the side-by-side comparison in the video. #IntegrativeModeling biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Immigrant academics in the US, especially from the global South, spend between 1-2 mos every 3 yrs on visa renewal. Even after having an approved petition. That definitely puts us at a disadvantage compared to those who don't have to go through this, & often goes unacknowledged.

Immigrant scientists in academia endure a unique kind of struggle. We are often not eligible for most fellowships and grants. We must be exceptionally productive—our publications and articles contribute towards our green card applications!

Excited to have this #teamtomo book finally out! Here's our chapter on #CryoFIBMilling, where we distilled the wisdom of >170 manuscripts. link.springer.com/chapter/10.100… Thanks to @BriegelAriane & @FriedrichForst1 for editing this giant book!

Finally- a book on cryo-electron tomography, written by leading experts! Edited by the one and only @FriedrichForst1 and myself! link.springer.com/book/10.1007/9…

When assessing immigrants for grants, jobs, etc. please consider the huge effort-sink that is immigration. If the candidate could accomplish X while managing their immigration apps & its anxieties, they could achieve more, when their immigration stabilizes (if ever).

📢'The World Is Your Oyster' is for those who are born in global north countries--don't experience visa bureaucracy & emotional burden that non-white global south scholars do. Citizenship is a privilege that we need to recognize in the academe. 1/n nature.com/articles/d4158…

It is great to see the #MicroED field growing and gaining momentum. I am aware of 5 new PIs that were hired this year. I am proud to say that 4 of those talented individuals were postdocs from our lab & they are now off to start their own groups. So proud of their achievements 😁

Proud to share the result of an amazing collaboration with Javi Fernandez-Martinez, @RoutLab_RU , and @TheVillaLab ! biorxiv.org/content/10.110… Congrats to @dgvjayS @neeleshsoni03 @JoshHutchings94 @ig_ech and the team! And check out the video by @neeleshsoni03 ! #NPC

Excited to share our manuscript on the in-cell structures and models of the nuclear basket (of nuclear pore complex; NPC) from both yeast and mammals! + Structural variations of NPCs across yeast, mammals, and protozoa. Will do a tweetorial later! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

It cannot be done, they said.. It's too flexible, they said.. 😁 biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #NPC #teamtomo #integrativemodeling by @dgvjayS @neeleshsoni03 @JoshHutchings94 @ig_ech et al. Great collaboration w/ Qiang Guo, Brian Chait, Javi Fernandez-Mtnz, @RoutLab_RU @salilab_ucsf
