Australians lose billions annually to increasingly sophisticated scams. This week Parliament will debate scams protection legislation, but the govt’s model doesn’t protect consumers as well as it should. I’ll be moving an amendment to improve it. theage.com.au/interactive/20…

The NT govt’s plans for the Middle Arm gas hub failed to get approval from Infrastructure Australia. The Albanese govt should take the $1.5 billion it has allotted to this new fossil fuel project, and spend it on renewable energy projects for the NT. abc.net.au/news/2024-11-1…

Australians under 18 don’t get paid super unless they work more than 30 hours a week. In 2024-25 this cost 505 000 young people an average of $730 - that’ll compound to $10 000 by retirement. ‘Universal’ super should be universal. We should change this discriminatory law.

Domestic airfares are up - a lot- after the collapse of Rex and Bonza. We need to protect small players in the aviation industry by ensuring the bigger companies play fair - by legislating effectively against slot-hoarding and other trade practices. theage.com.au/politics/feder…

When I became an MP, lounge access seemed a useful part of the job. But I soon became aware of the insidious nature of lobbying. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Australians want the major parties to demonstrate a strong commitment to action on climate change. Emissions reduction targets give industry certainty. Voters deserve to know exactly where the parties stand, before the next Federal election.

The Morrison govt pork-barrelled endlessly - sports rorts, carporks, water rorts… Today, Helen Haines drew attention to this govt’s infrastructure grants. Closed grants without transparency undermine trust in govt. Proud to second Helen’s Stop Pork-Barrelling Bill today.

2.9 million Australians will save $16 billion in HECS debts under the relief package to be announced today. This is real cost-of-living relief. It won’t increase inflation. It’s happened because Australians told their government it *had* to happen. theage.com.au/politics/feder…

Very glad to see that the NACC’s decision not to investigate Robodebt referrals has been reversed by the Commissioner. Australians deserve action on the damage and hurt that resulted from Robodebt, and we need to be able to trust that the NACC will be robust and effective.

While we’re *still* waiting for the govt to act on gambling advertising — the very least they could do is immediately close tax loopholes for gambling companies. Taxpayers shouldn’t be footing the bill for harmful industries’ research and development. theguardian.com/australia-news…

Don’t be fooled by the petty politics. I welcome the federal and state governments finally acting on the housing crisis. As the Federal Member for Kooyong I’ll work hard with all levels of govt for provision of well-designed, affordable housing as a matter of urgency.

It cost $5000/head to have dinner with PM after the Budget; when I asked him in Question Time who he’d hosted, he was dismissive. Those payments are not declared by the parties as donations. They clearly reflect cash for access, and should be declared. theage.com.au/politics/feder…

Congratulations to Jacqui Scruby, Thomas Emerson and Fiona Carrick, their teams and supporters for their strong and successful Independent campaigns in the NSW and ACT. It’s great to see communities come together and find their voices.

More than 3m Australian homes have rooftop solar, but many can’t afford the upfront cost of batteries to maximise electricity savings. It’s good government policy to help households take pressure off the grid while bringing their own power bills down. theage.com.au/politics/feder…
