A remarkable discovery: Language models can design WORKING ELECTRONIC DEVICES! 🤯🤩 Introducing Words2Wires. GPT-4 reaches 96% PASS@1 on generating 25 devices (schematics and code). Claude reaches 60% to 76%. Video: youtu.be/PZ1rr0dDAPI
It's increasingly clear that the #1 reason why companies are not releasing and open-sourcing LLMs is because they want to make money from them, not for ethical reasons. It's OK (companies gotta make money!) but let's not be misleading about it anymore please!
Google AI just announced the PaLM API! It will be released with a new tool called MakerSuite, which lets you prototype ideas, do prompt engineering, synthetic data generation and custom-model tuning. Waitlist available soon. developers.googleblog.com/2023/03/announ…
Actual email exchange I just had.
4,5 years ago, I half-jokingly told my students, for good research directions, one should look to the opposite of what everyone is doing: if everyone is using back prop, you should do forward; everyone end-to-end, you try closed-loop; everyone large models, you do small models...
It's okay, GPT, you don't have to pretend anymore.
We present “AudioGen: Textually Guided Audio Generation”! AudioGen is an autoregressive transformer LM that synthesizes general audio conditioned on text (Text-to-Audio). 📖 Paper: tinyurl.com/audiogen-text2… 🎵 Samples: tinyurl.com/audiogen-text2… 💻 Code & models - soon! (1/n)
I have several new postdoc openings for information extraction for news domain and scientific domain. Please email me if interested.
Hi, If you’re hanging around for the #acl2022nlp workshops and are into #bionlp, swing by our talk: Low Resource Causal Event Detection from Biomedical Literature 1/ 🧵
that the ML we do today is very similar to what was done since the 1980s, is kind of a well known story. but in this great talk @beenwrekt dates it back to the 1970s and before. very interesting and humbling watch! (h/t @__lfx ) youtu.be/47tKry9Dsy4
I say to Siri "set a timer for 4pm". Siri then tells me "Timers can't be set to a time of day, so I have set your 16:00 alarm". Who decided that Siri should do what I clearly wanted it to do, but also thought it would be worthwhile to chastise me for using the wrong term?
It also means that programming is, by consequence, inaccessible to people who don't want to put in the time to learn all the fundamental knowledge. And it shouldn't be! There should be simple languages/tools for doing simple tasks twitter.com/Aella_Girl/sta…
I don't wanna learn how programming building blocks work as I use them to build a lil rando pile, I want to learn how they work as I use them to build the actual house I want. If what I'm learning isn't connected to a payoff, then I lose the stamina to wade through the problems.

The Enterprise crew had trouble translating “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra”, but 30 years after the episode aired I made what I think is the first ever English-Tamarian translator and found language models can do it with 76% accuracy!🙂 #NLProc + #StarTrek arxiv.org/abs/2107.08146
Spent today reading in the science-of-science, scientometrics, & related literatures. Struck, as always, that scientific understanding is way upstream of everything they measure. Sometimes that makes sense - maybe you want to focus on economic impact. But it's a huge limitation
I'm looking for an intern! See the application below. This may be a little late in the season, but we're flexible for part-time if you have a main gig and still want to help. Please share it with any undergrads who might be interested. forms.gle/UtmjLJj3pmmd4X…

Curious that an article on the "Key moments in the emergence of our species" does not include any mention of the emergence of language.
