I kept thinking at our Maundy Thursday service last night how Jesus said he was deeply grieved to the point of death. We can’t fully identify nor can our finite minds adequately comprehend all that was crushing Jesus in Gethsemane, the Olive press. I think perhaps

This is one of the most important threads I’ve read all year. Experiences like what @LauraRbnsn had growing up are not okay, yet so common. And she provides keen insight into what was going on.
🧵I’ve said before that American evang. churches basically raise girls who are pre-groomed. I’ve attributed that to undue trust in men in the church and excessive suspicion of people outside of it (who could tell girls that what they’re experiencing is not healthy or normal).
She's a firecracker and a source of much laughter, encouragement, joy, and truth. And here she is trying to bear witness. I'm thankful for Beth Moore.
.@BethMooreLPM was one of the most celebrated female teachers in the Baptist faith until she spoke out against former Pres. Trump. She opens up to @LinseyDavis about the backlash, her decision to reveal a deep trauma from her childhood and new memoir, “All My Knotted-Up Life.”
We carry so much of our stress about the unknown in our bodies. Consider this practice as a means to check in with yourself, attune to God, and cultivate the capacity to lean in and let go. Read more, depree.org/practices-for-… #FullerSeminary #DePreeCenter @depreecenter
Wow wow wow. This is wonderful. 🙏
I've put together a Christmas gift ideas list at the blog; ideas for kids, adults, and stocking stuffers. bethfelkerjones.com/post/church-bl…
I've begun to write a series of prayers for creatives and artists. I've conceived it as a pair of trilogies and my hope is that they'll give voice to the opportunities and challenges of doing creative work. This is my Prayer For the Creative at Work: The Hard Stuff: Part 1.
So good, so true: "I really, really believe in healing....But I don’t think it’s one and done. It’s left-foot/right-foot, Aristotelian-type virtue stuff. If you want to be honest, you practice honesty, and if you want to be healed, you practice healing." latimes.com/entertainment-…
Such a thoughtful thread…I’ve seen this mindset in children, and I’ve seen this manifest in us adults, too.
Today I sat down with a student who hasn’t done anything in class so far (7 days in). All I told him was that I will give him feedback and another shot on it no matter what. Guess who turned in something today. It highlighted something important for me. 1/
There are three things to be hated, yes, four things to be despised. Raisins that replace chocolate chips, Decaf beverage that poses as coffee, Turkey that parades as bacon, and dogs that are smaller than cats. Amen and amen.
This is a prayer that I’ve written for Christians of whatever country in the world who are celebrating an Independence Day, like the Fourth of July, or a national holiday, like Australia Day. In your mercy, O Lord, hear our prayer.
Thoughts from the weekend: A silent retreat is great until you decide to do it in nature and a giant spider starts crawling onto your neck. Then it becomes a no-longer-silent retreat.
I think one of my biggest mistakes in ministry thus far has been that, when things didn’t go the way I expected, I considered it failure instead of an opportunity to grow. I forgot how to learn. Thank God that in his kindness, he is gently teaching me how to learn again.
What if we made 2022 stand out for our quiet acts of sacrificial, committed love (ḥeseḏ) even in the midst of continuing anxiety, constraint, and loss? By God’s grace, may it be so.
Within 3 days of Christmas the church asks us to confront a martyrdom & a massacre, to disabuse us of all sentimentalizing tendencies & to remind us that God reckons directly with senseless evil & gross injustice—in the world & in our hearts too. My Prayer for the Holy Innocents:
I feel this in my soul
Did I freak out over nothing today, and it was actually totally fine? Yes. Am I going to learn from that and not freak out in the future? Almost certainly not.
A realization I've come to in reading on the subject & talking with female friends is that awareness of the *possibility* of rape is something many (most?) women live with constantly, across the globe. I, on the other hand, have never once thought of myself as "rapeable."
Christianity does not look like praying and singing and giving money while ignoring the screams, unspeakable suffering, filth, and death of others. Christianity is not calling others *them*—somehow unlike us, not human, deserving of their suffering.
Getting super stoked for UALC's Vision Sunday! Come worship God as ONE body at the Mill Run Amphitheater. 8.13.17 @ 10:30am! #ualcvision
