The new sungrazer continues to perk up! Lots of solar activity overnight too, and we seem to have a moderate particle storm in the images (the white "snow"). These are relativistic (i.e. near speed of light) particles blasted out by flares/CMEs*, that reach SOHO within ~minutes
For screen readers to recognize headings, heading text can't just be body text or normal text that's been made to look bigger and bolder. It must be formatted as a heading. In Microsoft Word and Google Docs, this can be done in the styles box. In HTML, use the tags h1 through h6.

The seasons of the Sun 🌿☀️🍂❄️ Just as Earth has seasons, our Sun moves from times of frequent eruptions to stretches of relative quiescence. It’s all part of the roughly 11-year solar cycle. Learn more in this new installment of NASA’s Illuminate series! 👇
🎉🎂 Happy Birthday to NASA's Spritacular #CitizenScience project! On this special day, we’re celebrating the amazing volunteers who've helped capture sprites and advance our understanding of these mysterious atmospheric phenomena. Thank you for your inspiring contributions! 🛰️⚡
Not spooky, but still giving goosebumps! NASA space weather analyst Carina Alden works with space weather data as a career, but only recently witnessed the aurora for the first time. Mind = blown. Read her first-hand account on the Aurorasaurus blog: bit.ly/3Y6iaTM
Echoes of the Night Sky: Join NASA’s Eclipse Soundscapes #CitizenScience team for a community webinar on October 23rd at 3pm ET to discover how AudioMoth devices used during recent solar eclipses are now aiding in nocturnal migration monitoring. Register: bit.ly/4eUoRPB
NASA's Eclipse Megamovie volunteers took over 1 Tb of photos of the April 8th total solar eclipse. Want to test your #coding skills? Compete to create the best #SolarEclipse photo-sorting machine, win prizes, & make lasting contributions to solar science: go.nasa.gov/4dQwyWj
Now that we’ve had a big auroral event, I’m wondering if you all have any questions about what you saw what happened I may be able to answer. I’ll give it my best shot and point to references when needed, but ask away. Let me hear your questions about the aurora!
Yesterday’s solar storm lit up the sky last night, pushing auroras to unusually low latitudes – within range of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. That means it’s time for an AURORA PHOTO DROP! 🔥 🔥 Image: @NWSSWPC
LOOK TO THE NORTH! No matter where you are across the northern and central United States, you have a decent chance of seeing the northern lights TONIGHT! They are happening NOW over the Northeast/New England/Mid-Atlantic/Great Lakes. SPREADING WEST SOON! ENJOY!
How to Photograph the Northern Lights With a Smartphone. An 𝕏 thread. With our CME now impacting Earth, it's time to get those cameras charged and final preparations ready to photograph the Northern Lights! “But what if I don’t have an actual camera?” That’s fine! The majority…
Check the red "view line" to see where aurora is currently visible! Whether you do or don't see it, you can make a valuable report to aurorasaurus.org. Please be patient, as the site is running under heavy load. You can also backdate reports once rested after your chase!✨
Those interested in the aurora... Solar storm hit this morning. Europe is getting good aurora, as expected. Cross your fingers activity will hold until nighttime for the US! Conditions look strong for mid-latitude aurora tonight... By @KashaPatel ⤵️ washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/1…
I am looking for people with loved ones in jails or prisons in Hurricane Milton's path. If that's you, and you are willing to talk, reach out at sheffernan@themarshallproject.org Info I have so far is below.
I called the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office to see if they were moving people at the jail, who are in a mandatory evacuation zone for the hurricane heading to Tampa, Florida. The answers are vague. (1/)
Not all eruptions on the Sun are triggered by solar flares! This morning we saw a large quiet-Sun filament eruption, with the start of the movie below showing the event from AIA and SUVI telescopes respectively. *Cool* stuff! (relative to the surrounding hotter atmosphere)

Timelapse flying by Hurricane Milton about 2 hours ago. 1/6400 sec exposure, 14mm, ISO 500, 0.5 sec interval, 30fps
Here’s another view of today’s X9-class solar flare, the most powerful of this solar cycle, featuring two different wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light captured by NASA’ Solar Dynamics Observatory. 🧐
