@echoechoR Comment I received this morning from the CEO “This is the slickest slide deck I’ve seen in this organization”, just want to pass on this kudos from taking your classes 😊

my mom: "Don't make it a wasted trip." As in: going outside + garbage is full? Take out the garbage on your way out. See also: if there's something on the bottom of the stairs, carry it upstairs on your way up. And vice versa.

What is a random piece of micro-advice your parents gave you? Not advice on big or significant things, but nevertheless something you’ll never forget. My mom used to say “One dog is a pet. Two dogs is dogs.”

I made this 1-page list of options for PhDs & other academics who want to continue working at universities, just not as traditional academics anymore. Read and share with students, postdocs, and other PhDs: fromphdtolife.com/2020/07/16/whe…

1. The most impactful thing you can do now is update your bio 💡 Having a strong bio that shares who you are, what you do, and why you care invites people to connect with you. Here's a video I did with @echoechoR about your bio youtu.be/b8oTNAT2PBM

What do we think about “gaps” in your experience? I'm regularly asked this question when I do workshops with PhD students and postdocs. It depends, but good employers aren’t going to bat an eye with a gap (weird term) of a few months. More info in this thread! 🧵👇🏻

As an academic writing coach, I know how common a backlog of unwritten papers and that “blank page syndrome” are. Here are the 9 most common reasons for why we procrastinate on writing scientific papers. A thread. 🧵 (Spoiler: It's not because you're lazy or untalented.)

Many PhD advisors claim that they can't help their students and postdocs find a job outside academia. Here are five reasons why that's wrong and what advisors can do and say instead. A 🧵!

📢 No one wants to see a boring academic talk & lecture. No one wants: - walls of text (being read to the audiece) - alllll the data, - little-to-visuals, - aka #DeathByPowerpoint No, not even academics or other "professional people" want to see it #AcademicChatter #PhdChat
