PETER DUTTON: ONE INTERVIEW, NINE FALSE CLAIMS An #auspol thread 🧵 on Peter Dutton’s extraordinary 2GB interview this morning. 🤥
Donanemab headlines: "Beginning of the end" - "Turning point" - "Brink of wonder" - "Beats disease" - "New era" Treatment group was three points better on a 144 point scale than the placebo - a roughly 2% difference. You've heard this story before. This isn't the one.
Sorry, I couldn’t hear you over the sound of the German coal mine ramping up because you shut down your biggest source of clean energy
yawn, another US 'green' who gets to feel smug by dunking on European.
if Germany just kept their nuclear plants running they could have completely eliminated coal

MONSTER ASIAN HEAT WAVE Several all-time record high temperatures have been broken. The Asian heat wave has spread further reaching Japan usatoday.com/story/news/wea… #heatwave #ClimateChange #globalwarming
Sharing this in case it's useful: I find that students often have a hard time conceptualizing quantitative parameters in genomics and popgen Here's a cheat-sheet I put together for teaching. It's also part of a textbook I have been writing on human genetics (more on that below)
Every so now and again a paper ticks all the boxes and makes you drop everything until you’ve devoured it whole. This genome analysis of Beethoven’s hair includes a lot, from extra pair paternity to a plausible cause of death. Chapeau.
At very long last, the publication of the flagship paper of The Beethoven Genome Project. Lots of ground is covered in this paper and the interpretations of almost all of the major findings will, I hope, promote interesting and high-quality debate. cell.com/current-biolog…
The BBC has decided not to broadcast an episode of David Attenborough’s flagship new series on British wildlife because of fears its themes of the destruction of nature would risk a backlash from Tory politicians and the rightwing press theguardian.com/media/2023/mar…
Had a fascinating conversation w/ a grad student this morning. I explained to him that he was not trying to prove his hypothesis, he is testing his hypothesis, and that a good hypothesis is one that can be disproved, ideally quickly. He said that no one had ever told him that.
In the 70's, K. Ralls actually reviewed the evidence. She found that most mammals were not very dimorphic in body mass, esp. in species-rich taxa. But hardly anybody listened. Most ppl just kept citing Darwin & carrying on with the 'larger males' narrative. (3/13)
Finally back to seeing tweets from people I follow. Omg.
As a psychologist, i predict the marine biologists about 12-20 years from realizing nothing they publish replicates Ask me how I know

I’ve made this video as an intuition pump for the density of #synapses in the #brain. This volume ~ grain of sand, has >3.2 million synapses (orange cubes). Peeling them away leaves only inputs on 2 #neurons. Zooming in, we see the synapses localized to the dendritic spines. #b3d
Well this is a bust because I can’t see the view count on this tweet. Anyway, who th cares. It’s just more bs another metric that’s completely meaningless. Elon I thought you were going to resign as ceo.
Twitter is rolling out View Count, so you can see how many times a tweet has been seen! This is normal for video. Shows how much more alive Twitter is than it may seem, as over 90% of Twitter users read, but don’t tweet, reply or like, as those are public actions.
On Tuesday morning, a woman called Zahra was preparing to take her final university exams. By evening, she was effectively expelled because of her gender, like every other female university student in Afghanistan.
“The ABC has considered the findings & has serious concerns the ACMA’s interpretation…will have negative consequences for the future production of strong public interest journalism.” ACMA criticises 4 Corners for describing Jan 6 rioters as a “mob”. 👀 What were they, then?
ACMA rejects majority of Fox News complaints about Four Corners report. about.abc.net.au/statements/abc…
I don't know why everyone wants me to comment on the nuclear fusion news. It's all well and fine and a great experimental achievement and all, but as I've said before, that's energy in and out of the reaction, not the entire system. Great science, but far from application.
