most important principle Democrats need to uphold right now is being willing to have tough conversations about future of the party. “Purge the heretic” and “paper over disagreements” hasn’t worked. Lots of people disagree with me, and I have no desire to kick them out of the tent
Sign me up for both
The weird thing about this is that it’s pitched as an alternative to what others mean by abundance (zoning reform, occupational licensing reform, nepa reform and increased infra spending, etc). But it’s mostly just orthogonal to it - ideas that in no way conflict w/them

My abundance agenda - Break up big tech which hoards the future - Regulate addictive social media which devours time - Ban exclusive dealing & noncompetes which destroy freedom - Ban price gouging giving oil monopolists a moat against renewables - Ban price crimes in housing
I really wish more of the left wing critics of “abundance” were like “yeah we need to go back to the New Deal where you could create the TVA in a span of months” instead of “you think it’s bad that NEPA lawsuits for a transmission line take 20 years, you dirty neoliberal?!?”
The original "abundance agenda". If only Bookchin were around today to see so many people denouncing post-scarcity.
Great rundown on the NEPA ruling from @robinsonmeyer, with the core takeaway that 3 days in, we still can’t agree on what this all means :)
D.C. Circuit's shocking new NEPA ruling just threw permitting law into chaos. @robinsonmeyer dissects the news below, with insights from @EnergyLawProf, @sambhavsankar, and @nicholas_bagley: heatmap.news/climate/nepa-r…
Democratic politicians whining about The Groups off the record is so pathetic. oh nooooo those meanie nonprofit foundations maaaade us do things. grow up!
I've reported critically on progressive group dynamics, but I'm seeing the post-election discourse trend in a bad direction and I want to offer a corrective here People are starting to blame advocacy orgs for what clearly remains the responsibility/onus of the elected official
Obama remains wildly popular and beloved by most Americans. The decision by some special interests to spend the last decade denouncing him and attacking his record looks like the biggest possible gift to the Republican Party possible.
This was Obama Magic, he was a liberal democrat who normal people that didn't really pay attention the news liked and trusted
The Californication of national Democratic politics.
Read @ezraklein on the mysterious power of the groups. What I was told about this by members who back the bill is that EJ groups with no concrete leverage were just very effective at persuading non-specialist staffers — more a question of epistemics than power.
IMO, Pennsylvania should become the most YIMBY state in the nation. Let’s do this, Governor.
Having a home you can call your own, raise a family in, and grow old in with dignity — that’s a key part of the American dream. But over the past 15 years, Pennsylvania’s rate of homeownership has fallen and the cost of housing has skyrocketed. We’re not building enough new…
wow he really is trying to relate to Trump voters

Valuable new report comparing state “pro-housing designation” programs. I’m pretty skeptical of these programs bc they neither base designation on outcomes (e.g., estimated supply elasticities) nor require concurrent upzoning/streamlining/fee-hacking on same sites.
Six state-level pro-housing designation programs have been enacted across the country in recent years in both red and blue-leaning states. Which are likely to spur meaningful reform? A new Terner Center report profiles the progress to date: ternercenter.berkeley.edu/research-and-p…
