this resonated with me today.
Maturity is choosing peace over drama, distance over disrespect, boundaries over their feelings, solitude over fake company, resonance over history, progress over perfection, discipline over comfort zone, self-love over seeking validation, and saying "no" over people-pleasing.
Classroom management is not about having the right rules… it’s about having the right relationships.
This week I asked students 5 questions to help build a culture of learning: 1. How do you learn new info best? 2. How do you like to show your learning to others? 3. What are you curious about? 4. What are your learning strengths? 5. What attributes do you need in a teacher?
This is great. In getting to know your students, I always ask who you work well and opposite. It helps in getting to know them as sometimes that friend is the one who distracts them from their learning and they need your help to stay focused.
5 ways to build agency on the first day of school: 1. Build a Learning Strengths Wall. What do you bring to our community of learners? 2. Co-design some essential agreements & collaborative norms. What do you need to learn best? 3. Plan with curiosity in mind. What do you…
5 seeds to plant on the first day of school: 1. Agency: voice & choice. 2. Curiosity: lessons that spark awe. 3. Equity: all can succeed. 4. Wellness: calm, confident & joyous spaces. 5. Competency development: HOW we learn matters. Intentional starts create inspiring ends.
Formative assessment is not a task but a practice.
Much of what's called "formative assessment" is testlike and drives teaching in the wrong direction. Preferable alternatives: Yetta Goodman's "kidwatching" (is.gd/QjngJh) and, in math, 1-on-1 conversations as described by Marilyn Burns (is.gd/gJ7cWL)
There is something off when, in a discussion of good teaching and powerful learning, the burning question on teachers' minds is "yeah, but how do we grade?" When grading rather than learning becomes our focus, we have lost the plot
So pleased to be joining this community! @HISVietnam
We are pleased to introduce the new HIS Secondary Principal for the 2023/24 academic year, Mr. Terry Linton. Mr. Terry has a rich background in teaching and leading MYP and DP schools and will be joining us in Hanoi with his wife and 2 daughters. Welcome to HIS.
Starting July 2023, I shall be the Secondary Principal at Hanoi International School. I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity to join this fantastic community of learners. @DaunYorke @HISVietnam
We booked our first international trip since 2019. Linton family headed to Vietnam. We are looking forward to some sun, great food, and just being free. Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, Nha Trang, it will be awesome!
All teachers are language teachers, and I spend some time each lesson on topical vocabulary or "fun" words. My favorite method is the three-point approach. Word- Picture - Def'n - Used in a sentence. It gets fun with more abstract words, but the sentence is the best part!
I can tell when a teacher can create a sense of urgency in the classroom during observation, and it almost always is an excellent lesson. Creating this sense requires preparation and active learning. Those teachers are up, moving around the class, and urging the students on!
Consider relationships in our current context and the value of creating and building those relationships to support our students. We haven't seen parents face-to-face in years. Let's hope we can have parents in our buildings in the coming semester.
Mise en place is having everything you need in place before the cooking happens. Excellent teaching is in the planning and preparation. Having conversations with teachers about how they plan stresses the importance. Not all teachers have daily lesson plans, but they should.
I try to provide thinking time and bring conscious non-judgmental awareness to metacognition in my classroom through mindfulness. For the students in the classroom, it allows them to be aware of thoughts, actions, and feelings.
As Dewey said, “We do not learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience.”The best teachers know that reflection is learning and fit it into their lessons, so kids don't know they are reflecting. The worst thing to do, let's do a reflection!
A big part of my day today is checking in on teacher wellbeing. I'll also reach out to my students to see what I can do to support them. I want to visit people in their online lessons but it might be too intrusive. How are other school leaders supporting people during this time?
It's a bit derailed with us going online, but I'm getting a PLC going on classroom management with a group of volunteers. People seem excited to join and I'm looking forward to the sharing that will take place.
Today is off as a mid-term break and reflecting on teacher and student well-being. Teaching is a lonely enough job, further compounded by being online. Time to bring back the virtual staff room and think about a virtual student centre. #Wellbeing
Seems like we weren't actually locked down. I just went out the gate and kept walking. My children haven't complained about the lack of freedom and seem almost happy. Another week of online is coming. Hoping for good news coming soon.
