Shout-out to all my queer friends in the US who are hurting right now.

In the past 3 weeks alone, 99% of Senator Babet’s posts have been about how much he loves Donald Trump or related to the US election Odd for someone who was elected to represent VICTORIA in the AUSTRALIAN Senate

My 55 yo friend who is having postmenopausal bleeding just called me from CVS in TX bc they refused to fill her Rx for misoprostol (used to open the cervix) bc she couldn’t prove she wasn’t having an abortion. She is having surgery in 2 days. This is what total abortion bans do.

Sadly, no surprise to see the tobacco wars intensifying. So long as the govt continues to hike tobacco taxes and maintain the ban on consumer vapes, the black market will grow, violence will spread, and more innocent people will be caught in the crossfire. abc.net.au/news/2024-11-0…

Chronic illness is so different than acute illness. When I first got sick, people checked on me. As time went on, people became desensitized to it. I’m asked about my sickness less and less, and major medical events don’t make people bat an eye even when I’m still suffering.

It’s very difficult when the only group that can help you has also abused you. #IatrogenicHarm

If I could help people understand ONE thing about chronic illness - it would be that you can’t understand until it happens to you. You can learn about it, you can empathize - but until you feel the crushing monotony of constant suffering - you won’t truly “get” it 🧵

Ugly laws will be enforced in Louisiana. Medical masks allowed at “police discretion”. Police chief says: “We do have to look at behavior of person, what they're doing at time, those kinds of things." I have a disability that makes me LOOK nervous 🧵/1 tinyurl.com/2bv2e5t6

Doctors are reporting that people with autism supported by the NDIS are ending up homeless when their funding runs out. They are taking up hospital beds for months while NDIS issues are sorted. The system is overwhelmed, and this is putting even more strain on healthcare.

Australia has many pigeon species, among them the shy, exclusively ground-foraging east coast Wonga Pigeon (Leucosarcia melanoleuca).

Here are the rest of the changes to the NDIS that were discussed long before the NDIS Review dropped. They planned it before Lisa Paul, Bill Shorten's new employer at the University of Canberra, had handed down the NDIS Review. This was the LNP's plan. dataresearch.ndis.gov.au/reports-and-an…

For those not already aware, support coordination is destined to go under the new plans for the #NDIS. They will replace support coordinators and local area coordinators with navigators, required to be 'locally based with specialised knowledge'. " Source: Redbridge focus groups

Antidepressant withdrawal symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed as relapse. This can then lead to patients believing they need to be on the antidepressant for life.

While antidepressants were once considered a short term solution, many people have now been on them for years, even decades. This increases the risk of severe withdrawal and suicide attempt when they go off them.

That would be the case if we had a very different culture in mh services. As it is, such an -'empowering' argument is too often used when folk are 'not engaging' because of the way they are (mis)treated. Treat anyone bad enough and they'll 'vote with their feet' eventually but

Natasha Swingler Reposted

There needs to be much more curiosity & understanding of what "non engagement" actually is. Is it that the person genuinely doesn't want mental health services involved, or is it that mental health services are inaccessible to them..? Are they struggling to get to appointments 1/

Counterpoint: discharging patients who don't engage can be good, & respecting their wishes, & avoiding restrictive or intrusive practices, & upholding their rights. It needs a clear rationale to go for assertive outreach. The problems arise where you have one but ignore it.

If public mental health services in Qld, the ACT, and Victoria met their legal obligations, we'd see daily evidence of considering relevant human rights in these areas. The outcome? More equality, non-coercion, and safety. No brainer! Learn more here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10…
