This is quite something. The most comprehensive investigative research into Royal finances I've seen. Even the NHS is being charged by the Royals. If there is no discussion now about whether the monarchy can go on like this, then I don't know when. thetimes.com/uk/royal-famil…
The Brexit quart won’t fit into Labour’s pint pot. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. Wes Streeting sees Brexit damage as a 'fact of life' to be lived with, but other facts of political life make it unsustainable to confine Brexit to the margins: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2024/10/the-br…

JD Vance, Donald Trump’s nomination for US vice-president, has poured scorn on the idea that climate change is man-made, has had to cancel campaign events in Georgia because of the unprecedented Hurricane Helene. ‘Say a prayer for our friends in Florida and Georgia,’ he tweets.
Press photo from his flight to NI. Seriously, though. His handlers really, *really* hate him, don’t they?
The worst prime ministerial launch of an election campaign in modern times. Even PMs doomed to defeat have managed to start the gun with a sense of elegant purpose. Speaking words that failed to compel in a Lear like storm has no precedent.
Extremely sobering read. China is building a full-on Silicon Valley style ecosystem of ultra fast moving & hypercompetitive EV makers, while the US auto industry focuses on who can make a gas powered truck that most resembles a Bradley fighting vehicle insideevs.com/features/71901…
Two words of caution. Having unbundled there is little evidence portfolio managers want to rebundle so optionality is unlikely to change behaviour. FCA was biggest proponent of MIFID2 so the idea that this was a EU project that our regulators were tied into has no foundation.
Brexit has mullered UK goods trade: - both imports and exports hit - down not just with the EU but also rest of the world But bigger/wider effects than I'd have expected.
Every major pension industry in develop world is hugely overweight its domestic equity market - by an average of 2089%. The UK is 41% underweight its own. Even eliminating the anti-home bias would be constructive. And we wonder why we have an investment & productivity problem
Latest bid for Wincanton plc at a huge 103% premium to pre-bid share price. A further illustration of public equity discount in UK markets (& higher cost of equity capital) due to UK pensions industry being only one in the world underweight its own market polaris.brighterir.com/public/wincant…

This has to be one of the most depressing charts for the UK economy. Share price returns for the 50% most domestically-orientated companies on the FTSE All Share have flatlined since Brexit; for internationally-orientated plcs returns kept increasing. Not the case 2010-2016
Guardian letter writers are on a roll at the moment!👇🏻 👏👏
Seriously people - look at what's happening in terms of GDP/capita (which is what ultimately matters for our living standards). This is a proper recession just being hidden by having more people - GDP/capita declined 0.7 per cent in 2023 with falls in every single quarter

A country of the rack of Tory Brexitism. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. Flipping from 'centrism' to populism, Sunak's depthless leadership is the latest episode in the Tories' 30 year war to which they have yoked the country: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2023/11/a-coun…
