Here are some of the big stats from Milton. The storm made landfall near Siesta Key at 8:30 pm as a category 3 storm. The highest official wind gust reported was 107 mph at Venice. Highest rain total was in St. Petersburg with 18" of rain. Now the damage assessment begins.

In case you’re wondering, it’s the tireless work of these hurricane hunters that pierce the eye of the storm taking measurements - so we know what the storm is up to #HurricaneMilton

Bumpy ride into Hurricane #Milton on @NOAA WP-3D Orion #NOAA43 "Miss Piggy" to collect data to help improve the forecast and support hurricane research. Visit hurricanes.gov for the latest forecasts and advisories Visit noaa.gov/milton for information that you…

#Milton's max winds of 175 mph are the strongest for a #hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico this late in the calendar year on record. The latest calendar year Atlantic #hurricane with max winds of 175+ mph prior to Milton was Rita (22 September 2005).

In spite of round the clock efforts, many still don’t have light on across the Western Carolinas #wncwx

The damage to the village of Chimney Rock itself is catastrophic. Mayor Peter O’Leary told me “Our economy is 100% tourism, and it’s 100% gone.” He says every single structure in the town is either destroyed or severely damaged.

NEW: I was able to get some great ground video in Chimney Rock, NC this afternoon — a gorgeous mountain tourist town near Lake Lure that was all but washed away by Hurricane #Helene This will be a sad thread for everyone who loves WNC 🧵 @wsoctv @WLOS_13

Good info on how water is moved through the system to try to mitigate a flooding threat #Helene

Important to understand how @DukeEnergy moves water through our river systems. The majority of our lakes along the Catawba River have crested and are expected to slowly decline over the next several days. Other lakes may continue to rise resulting in flooding. #ncwx #scwx

Recent heat and several weeks of dry weather add up to a tough time for lawns, gardens and us! #drought #ncwx #scwx

🥵 Much of the Southeast experienced several heat waves and lack of rainfall over the past month. Pastures/rangelands are going dormant amid concern for livestock. High evapotranspiration rates are drying soils and vegetation, increasing fire concerns. bit.ly/USDM062524

Three weeks into summer - already wishing for Fall

We only dropped down to 79° in Charlotte this morning which broke a record for warmest low temperature on this date. The last time we fell to just 79° in Charlotte was back in 2010.
