New: Trump’s transition team is bypassing traditional FBI background checks for at least some Cabinet picks while using private companies to vet potential candidates for admin jobs, sources tell us. More w/ @evanperez, @KristenhCNN & @HolmesLybrand cnn.com/2024/11/15/pol…
NEW: In a letter sent to Biden before election & made public now since there’s been no WH response, more than 80 Dem members of Congress press Biden admin to sanction members of Israeli Govt. for the rise in settler violence, etc., in the West Bank in his final weeks in office.
My colleagues and I have spent the past weeks digging into RFK Jr — his record, his allies, his plans. Some proposals, like fighting Big Pharma and Big Food, appeal to many Dems. But his anti-vax views + other issues overshadow that. A few thoughts, in no particular order:
So. It’s RFK Jr. There is no precedent for this in public health — someone who has spent years questioning the safety of vaccines now potentially overseeing the federal agency charged with vaccine safety. w @LaurenWeberHP @jdawsey1 @michaelscherer washingtonpost.com/health/2024/11…
Lutnick: "He’s not getting a job for HHS." Me: "He would not be in charge of HHS?” “No,” Lutnick said, “of course not."
Trump transition co-chair Howard Lutnick — in charge of helping staff the gov if he wins — says he had a 2.5 hour meeting with RFK Jr. who talked about pulling (safe and proven) vaccines from the market. Lutnick says RFK will not be in charge of HHS, despite what RFK said.
BREAKING: THE ONION backed by some of the Sandy Hook families and in a special deal with Everytown for Gun Safety has acquired INFOWARS story coming
Johnson’s thin majority gets thinner. Already lost two other members to Trump administration. Johnson indicated just yesterday that he thought Trump was done picking House members. “President Trump fully understands and appreciates the math here, and it's just a numbers game.”
New: Mike Johnson announced that Matt Gaetz resigned today to give GOP time to fill his seat as he prepares for the AG confirmation process
The committee can still release the report on Gaetz if the majority of the committee agrees to it. So just one Republican needed for it to be made public.
SCOOP: Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned from Congress just two days before the House Ethics Committee was set to vote on releasing a “highly damaging” report outlining its investigation into Gaetz, sources tell me @bresreports & @JakeSherman The panel no longer has jurisdiction when he…
Anyone who has covered FL politics knows these 2 don't have a friendly history. Scott once called Gaetz "disgusting" and "embarrassing." Gaetz said Scott was "inconsiderate" for throwing a party in the governor's mansion on his last night in office (after DeSantis had moved in).
Congrats @mattgaetz! I have enjoyed working with you while you were in the Florida Legislature and now in Congress. I know you will continue working hard for our country!
Huge scoop from Jake, Bres and Mel — the House Ethics Committee was scheduled to vote in TWO DAYS to release the “highly damaging” report on its investigation into Matt Gaetz. Gaetz’s resignation means the Ethics panel loses its jurisdiction, effectively ending the probe.
🚨 🚨BREAKING NEWS FROM @PunchbowlNews : Rep. Matt Gaetz's (R-Fla.) resignation from Congress came two days before the House Ethics Committee was set to vote on releasing a “highly damaging” report outlining its investigation into the Republican, according to multiple sources…
#NEWS: ExxonMobil opposes Trump’s plan to exit Paris Accord “We advocate for policy that accounts for security, affordability, reliability and environmental stewardship – not drastic changes that could hinder the progress being made today,” an ExxonMobil spokesperson said
Thune in 2014 after SCOTUS ruling on Obama recess appointments: “When the president couldn’t get his appointments through the Senate, he decided to ignore the law and attempt an end run around Congress….Congress, not the president, has the authority to determine its own rules.”
THUNE responds to Trump’s call for recess appointments. He says “all options are on the table” to speed up Trump’s Cabinet nominations
Democrats after losing by 2 points: Our brand is in ashes. We need a complete overhaul. Republicans after losing by 4.5 points: Let's run the same guy again.
Need proof Trump's appeal isn't easily transferrable to other Republicans? Sen. Jacky Rosen (D) is on track to receive fewer votes in Nevada than Harris, but still won #NVSEN b/c at least 70k Trump voters didn't bother voting for Sam Brown (R).
Two simple but telling ways to see the efficacy of the Harris campaign is that in addition to her favorables spiking by 15, there’s this: wherever they ran ads, they lost only 3 points from 2020; where they didn’t, they lost 7. The base reality was awful. Now picture Biden there.
A quick thread as I watch some Democrats poke at the idea that there was something wrong with the election. There wasn't, and let's not find ourselves stoking the same conspiracies as election deniers just because our side didn't win. 1/
Not true. @MaricopaVote is working around the clock, through the weekend. We won't stop until all results are reported.
Tyler Boyer just announced that Maricopa is taking the weekend off from counting. @Garrett_Archer is this true? This is crazy if true. Too bad we can’t ask Richer. @billgatesaz @AZGOP
Worth noting also that the construction industry is 31% Hispanic, so any slowdown in construction/renovation due to higher interest rates & the cost of supplies would hit Hispanics especially hard. And housing starts fell to a 4-year low this year.
New @CookPolitical: over 145M votes now counted, Trump's popular vote lead down to 3.0%. cookpolitical.com/vote-tracker/2…
Where did Trump voters get their news? 📰 Yes, there's social and partisan sites, but there is another influential strategy that isn't getting enough attention: Manipulated, pay-to-play and all out fake news sites I've been covering a mix of those for years. Here's a primer 🧵
