Matt is so smart, so I’m reluctant to disagree with him, ever. But here I think he overlooks the extent to which Trump (sort of like Obama) is sui generis. Nobody else is going to be able to keep that coalition together because they lack Trump’s gifts (for lack of better term).
IMO, Trump’s ushered in a new political order in the US. Dems will still win plenty of elections—electoral politics is contingent, things are thermostatic, and that’s just how it works—but the playing field and coalitions have been durably rearranged. substack-proxy.glitch.me/articles/open-…
We would have been better off if Biden lost to Trump in 2020. No Jan 6, Trump owns crappy post Covid economy, and no viable heir to Trump. We’d probably be at the start of an 8-year Shapiro or Newsom administration, control of Senate, and a chance to replace Thomas and Alito.
Very much looking forward to the knives-out chaos of Vivek, DeSantis, Youngkin, Huck Sanders, Vance, et al. competing for Trump’s endorsement this time next year.
Sort of fascinated to see how Trump, a racist fascist, governs when his coalition includes significant numbers of minorities. His so ideologically unmoored that you could actually see him doing things that are good for them purely because he loves the accolades.
One thing I learned from this cycle: presidential campaigns could be 100 days long and we’d be just fine.
Untestable, but would be interesting if the Selzer poll *affects* the Iowa vote. Could see it motivating both sides.
I get why everyone thinks this is bad for Trump, but him cancelling these appearances, while Harris scrambles to do as many as possible, probably means that both sides recognize he’s on a glide path to winning.
