Well said by Tom Sharpe! One would think these vessels could at least be kept in reserve. Eric Grove's famous book "Vanguard to Trident" was already a depressing story by the time it got to the 1980's. A sequel; "Trident to Queen Elizabeth" would be absolutely doleful.
Another brilliant article @TomSharpe134 on the current challenges facing the Royal Navy. Its hard to disagree with a single word in it. telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/11/2…

This looks like a good choice for the US medium landing ship. If the design is mature then just buy it!

Fully agree. No group or nation can be allowed to hold a key maritime chokepoint hostage. That's just another form of piracy.
The new RS-26 MIRCV IRBM is especially scary for naval warfare. Engaging ballistic missiles is bad enough but engaging a hypersonic weapon that MIRV's with 6 warheads is terrifying.
Great thread on how Putin is forcing Europe to understand the new counterforce realities - Russia will use medium-range ballistic (Oreshnik/Hazel) and cruise (9M729/Screwdriver) conventional missiles in a conflict with NATO to hit critical deep theater targets.
drive.google.com/file/d/1X-ZSHY… Thanks to @CBSNews for having me on to talk about Russian missiles and thanks to fellow @ohiou grad Allison Brennan for setting it up. The Russian MIRV RS-26 represents an especially dangerous development in naval warfare
gcaptain.com/a-sea-change-n… A "rescue" or the acknowledgement of a significant shortfall in personnel that cannot be immediately fixed? Not good!
centerformaritimestrategy.org/publications/m… Will say it again, the U.S. should just buy these ships, and if there are not crews available keep them in reserve or give them to Australia or other ally.

Of course the Royal Marines won't be very deployable in the absence of actual amphibious warships.

Well said James, and decommissioning RN ships with service life remaining is just foolish.
Foundations? Britain has known what its foundations of defence has been for centuries. It’s the willingness to not educate yourselves to it that is the problem. This exercise, which holding a defence review is pointless when defence executives operate outside it when one is…
Any bets that one of the two UK carriers will be re-designated as an amphibious warfare ship, following in the ranks of previous RN carriers like Bulwark, Centaur and Albion???

The US Navy should offer to buy all of those ships except the Type 23 frigates as the amphibs and the replenishment ships likely have additional service life that could be utilized. Ridiculous that the ships other than the frigate should be scrapped. Keep them in mothball fleet.
