Report from @samlagrone of @USNINews that the @USNavy is planning to construct an eighth tranche (Block VIII) of their Virginia Class, nuclear-powered attack submarines, potentially pushing the arrival of their next generation "SSN(X)" into the 2040s. news.usni.org/2024/11/13/nav…

Nuclear reactors director Adm. Bill Houston said the Navy plans to take Virginia to Block VIII, SSN(X) will follow. Rough math, that SSN(X) contract award is about 15 years away.

Forgot the period in the front.

@michaelgwaltz and @SenMarkKelly were to co-sponsors of the SHIPS Act. If @RepMikeRogersAL ends up being SECDEF that’s a lot of sea power advocacy at the top of the administration. wsj.com/politics/natio…

In today's GD earnings call, CEO Phebe Novakovic said the company is slowing production on the Columbia class since the supplier base has not met pace with work at Electric Boat. The Navy asked for $17B to shore up the supplier base, but apparently, it wasn't enough.

Per @HMongilio the @SECNAV name of the next Virginia-class nuclear attack boat will be USS Baltimore (SSN-812). This is one of the two unpriced 2024 option boats the White House has asked for a $1.9B anomaly in the pending continuing resolution.

AFA? Naw braugh, the heads are at @NavalEngineers FMMS.

On assignment at Va. Beach. It is rainy, cold.

Updating the @JeffSchogol @TaskandPurpose sizzle reel to include his question at today's Pentagon briefing citing Kevin Costner ("No Way Out") ... Now as a YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=uiqgR5…

Alex brings up a good point. One of these boats is the secret squirrel seawarfare platform that costs about $1B more than a reg BlkV. That's priced into the original $9.6 estimate. This increase is $2B above that.

They arent just any SSN though. One is a bespoke seabed warfare hull, the other one is another Blk V SSGN. The seabed warfare hull was already projected to be north of $5 bln. This is more funding acrobatics than cost escalation IMO.

This is the first major ship contract cost increase due to post-pandemic inflation. These boats are $1B more than the 2019 multiyear Block Vs or 27 percent higher. We understand $11.3B is the floor not the ceiling. Buckle up. h/t to @reporterjoe & @dave_brown24 on their scoop
