There is a misleading rumour doing the rounds that Parliamentary privilege has been suspended over Southport matters. The sub judice rule (originated 1963, updated & equalised between both houses in 2001) prevents MPs or Lords from referring to an active court case.
What are the farmers planning?!?!?
Tony Blair once asked a top teacher how to improve state schools. 'That's easy,' came the reply. 'Line up every civil servant in the DfE, and machine-gun the lot of them.' Me for @thetimes on where a British Elon Musk should focus thetimes.com/comment/column…
I became 3% more right-wing just watching this
incredible to see the mancunians of all people try to pull the “just a smol hamlet overrun by globalisation” shtick in one of the cities that kick-started the industrial revolution and drove an imperial expansion that saw the british terraform india into a cotton plantation lmao
Absolutely, a poster in Manchester today. Worth a read.
An Irish bloke at a birthday party on Friday tried the whole ‘but thermonuclear war! Ukraine must surrender!’ line with me and I’m very proud of my self restraint in the argument that followed.
Whether you believe Russia will start a "nuclear war" over a few Western supplied Ukrainian missiles hitting targets in Russia (as Western missiles repeatedly struck targets inside Crimea, which Russia genuinely believes is theirs and did nothing) is tantamount to an IQ test.
Really interesting read on wider context of farming debate. It's much bigger than tax policy, it's about trust in a system which has been rocked by big changes in recent years and has left many in the farming community feeling detached from Westminster: unherd.com/2024/11/a-farm…
I wrote a thing. (And, for clarity, I don’t want any kind of revolt, I want to stay home and do my job) unherd.com/2024/11/a-farm…
Increasingly sure this bill must fail so that the Labour government see "I'm a good person so everything I do must be good" is not a way to run a country
This is a pretty extraordinary intervention by Harriet Harman when there are supposed to be impact assessments of private members bills to inform a collective Cabinet decision about neutrality, ahead of second reading of any bill. theguardian.com/society/2024/n…
It's important to appreciate that this sort of person really is so dumb that they think inheriting £6 million in assets means that you have access to £6 million. x.com/BladeoftheS/st…
This man will inherit £6m which he will have to pay just £0.6m Inheritance Tax on, over 10 years. He thinks he should inherit £6m for free, and so should all his children and so on forever. Because he is special, he's a farmer.
The US has decided to allow Ukraine to use longer-range missiles in Russia. This brings to a close a pretty feckless period of US policy towards Ukraine. A 🧵
This is so messed up and I love it 🤣
I need all of these people to spend as much time on a private plane with A Kennedy as possible.
Boybands Forever on iPlayer is brilliant and worth it alone for Louis Walsh, who now looks as though he lives in a house full of piles of newspapers and jars of his own piss.
I hope they all find each other ❤️
I would be so pissed off if this happened to me
'Hi Rob, writing on Nadine's claims about gay sex orgies in Westminster and you're mentioned.' @CharlotteIvers with the most unexpected WhatsApp message of the year... thetimes.com/comment/column…
