So I've written a thing about the radically different philosophies that underpin the reform agendas of the Labour government in education and health... It's a little geeky. progressivebritain.org/the-unnoticed-…

Excellent questions.

Has there been any assessment of the efficacy of Non Criminal Hate Incident recording? Has it stopped any crime? Has it reduced community tensions? How much resource has it taken up and has that been the best use of policing time?

Hermer' vision of a government whose decisions are driven by civil service lawyers at home and international courts abroad, is a vision that runs counter to the daily realities and responsibilities of democratic governance. Insightful by @yuanyi_z spectator.co.uk/article/keir-s…

UK GDP growth slowed sharply in Q3 and a slowdown in services is the main reason. Both services and overall GDP rose by just 0.1 percent. The worrying thing is that services activities will be hit hardest by Budget Nat Insurance rises. So the headwinds will intensify next year.

GDP grew 0.1% in Quarter 3 (July to Sept) 2024. Services grew 0.1%, construction grew 0.8% while production fell by 0.2%. Read more ➡️ ons.gov.uk/economy/grossd…

“Natalist-friendly”: Ultimately what I want is for people to have the number of kids they want to have, and for society to make this easier. Awesome new term here from @CartoonsHateHer that I am adopting forthwith. cartoonshateher.com/p/how-to-have-…

This chimes directly we've been finding - when you think of who the British Dream' has failed, we tend to think non-graduate, in a former industrial town in north/midlands (& often it has) - but you will also hear *very* similar sentiments from graduate big city professionals

Yes, the social contract is actually doubly-broken. For non-graduate, smaller town, non-South Easterners there are few good quality, well-paid, stable & dignified jobs. For graduates trying to make their way in London/SE, rent + loans + tax structure make you poor. Who wins?

Government will soon commission and set the price of 80% of the childcare market - and tightly control the terms and content of it all. The result: expensive, unaffordable childcare? Why do we keep putting our faith in planning, not the market? Thread. edrith.co.uk/p/the-lure-of-…

Just set up an account on the other place, where the sky is blue. Will still be here and probably using this as my primary site (for now), but interested to see what it's like over there! Same handle as here, if you're on there, give me a follow. :-)
