“I can keep doing my studies but at the rate that these are going, it’s going to take forever to figure this out,” Hall told STAT. “We don’t have forever. Chronic diet-related diseases are costing us a huge amount of money and a huge amount of suffering.”
Kevin Hall’s research at the NIH presents an existential challenge to the food industry, but he's asking the food industry to work with him. trib.al/Xn7vuij
There’s bipartisan support to tackle chronic diseases related to ultra-processed foods. @DrCaliff_FDA says we need higher-quality scientific research to inform better decisions. Let’s do this! @IRPatNIH @NIDDKgov statnews.com/2024/11/15/ult…
"Despite @DrCaliff_FDA statements, it looks like the Human Food Program is not particularly interested in chronic disease prevention or policy approaches to improving the environment of food choice" Will #MAHA and the Trump administration do a better job? foodpolitics.com/2024/11/the-fd…
We are still looking for interested candidates! Please share and contact me for more info: kevin.hall@nih.gov
Pls RT! Are you a recent college grad (or soon-to-be grad) interested in human nutrition & metabolism science? We are hiring three paid research trainees to join our lab @NIHClinicalCntr @NIDDKgov for 1-2 years starting in Spring 2025! For more info: training.nih.gov/research-train…
This is reasonable, and I agree that we must fix the system. At the same time, we need to understand what is causing this difference. Is it processing technique, preservatives, lack of fiber, or what? To understand, we must fund research like what @KevinH_PhD and others are…
I am fortunate to be able to spend 6-8weeks in Italy every summer. I work in Milan for 4-6 weeks and then take my summer vacation for 2-3 weeks. More importantly, I get to eat non American food sources for an extended period every year. And I always lose weight! Usually…
In Aug, Sen. Booker raised concerns about NIH funding cuts to research on how ultra-processed foods impact health (by @KevinH_PhD & others). RFK Jr and @calleymeans share the same goal, it’s time to break down barriers created by bureaucrats and make progress on things we concur.
In a letter to the NIH Director: "the NIH must robustly invest in the Metabolic Clinical Research Unit (MCRU). This should include, at a minimum, returning the MCRU to its 2017 capacity and staffing." Senators focusing on staffing ?🤨 booker.senate.gov/news/press/boo…
"Is🥓bad for you?" 📜Science exists to answer questions. If a question is vague and lame, then so are the results. Nutrition is among *the worst* fields for perpetuating poorly posed questions. BUT we can improve, TODAY! Our new editorial maps how: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38992167/

Every 5 yrs we convene DGAC then fail to fund the nutrition science they need to do their job. Solution: add $2b to NIH/USDA for nutrition research, $120m to NIH ONR, & build @KevinH_PhD a 50 bed RCT facility. Outstanding blog by @marionnestle foodpolitics.com/2024/10/the-20…
Looking forward to reading this new @HLFoodObesity report, but the headline is promising! committees.parliament.uk/committee/698/…
I'm curious. How does the DGAC propose to refocus the Dietary Guidelines on "improving the health span" in a country with widespread diet-related chronic disease by "reducing focus of the Dietary Guidelines on chronic disease risk reduction"?🤷♂️
BREAKING.. yesterday the DGAC proposed reducing the federal focus on chronic disease risk reduction in a stunning development that ignores record setting shorter U.S. lifespans and sick children. @SecBecerra @SecVilsack @SenSanders @SenBillCassidy @CoryBooker @MikeCrapo
Not surprising. “Dietary experts advise skipping guidelines on ultra-processed foods — for now” statnews.com/2024/10/21/ult…

📉Q: Is the US "peak obesity"? 💉Q: Did the obesity drugs "change everything"? 🥬Let us look at the actual data behind the headlines... Spoiler alert: 📉A: Way too early to know 💉A: One hell of a drug, but no
NEW: we may have passed peak obesity 🎉📈📉🙏 In what might be one of the most significant trends I have ever charted, the US obesity rate fell last year.
😅..time to officially dish out 🍽 the news! Super stoked to announce my appointment as a Stadtman Tenure Track Investigator @NIDDKgov @IRPatNIH where I'll be studying the impact of diet & metabolism on human neurochemistry! 🍔🍦🥗🧠 Hiring @ all levels! niddk.nih.gov/about-niddk/st…
Very proud to see @vdarcey being named a NIH Distinguished Scholar and starting her own lab @NIDDKgov @IRPatNIH!
Congratulations to NIDDK’s Dr. Valerie Darcey (@vdarcey) who was selected as a 2024 @NIH Distinguished Scholar alongside 14 colleagues from @NIAIDNews, @NatEyeInstitute, @NIHAging, @NCIResearchCtr, @NIEHS, @NIHClinicalCntr, @NICHD_NIH, and @NIH_NINDS! diversity.nih.gov/contributor/20…
People often say that ultra processed foods are engineered for plalatability. They are not. They are engineered for profit. We need to stop blaming palatability for the rise in obesity. The forces driving intake are varied, complex and often have nothing to do with pleasure.
