I’m increasingly convinced of the view that the primary purpose of radical politics is not to create political change, but rather to provide proponents with a sense of belonging and identity—and the opportunity to grandstand by administering purity tests

philosophy professor oomf said the proper way to be a moralist is to be engaged in an unrelenting war on yourself and simultaneously to be very easy on others

I suspect many people who were once gung-ho enforcers of left-wing ideological fads will start moderating. It will be tempting to punish these people and keep them on the outside. I get it. But @JustinTosi and I have argued that’s it’s bad to block peoples’ exits. Welcome them.

Popping back on here to share some recent work 🧵 1/ What does the censor have to know in order to be justified in censoring? More than we might think at first blush-- onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…

I plan to mostly ignore the election and just teach what's on the syllabus. I'm not a trained social worker or therapist, so I don't have any qualifications to help anyone. (1)

There's a certain ridiculousness to this all, and I was going for the laugh. But a serious point is that proceeding normally is often the best thing for people's wellbeing, and catastrophizing is often bad for it. I suspect a lot of attempts to help students encourage the latter.

Thanks to @an_capitalist for a fun discussion of Why It's OK to Mind Your Own Business youtube.com/watch?v=FOZyec…

How many times will the word "unacceptable" be tweeted from the new york area in the next 24 hours?

I've been living in basements for most of the past year, and yet I continue to feel no desire to participate in stupid fights online. Yet another massive L for standpoint epistemology.

It’s sometimes said that people want politics to take place in the background and don’t want to be doing politics all the time. In 2016, my doctor asked me if my students knew how dangerous Trump is while giving me a hernia exam. That’s what I think of when this point is made.

Michelle Ciurria didn't like our Grandstanding book either. That's ok. We just wish philosophers were more interested in our arguments than imputing bad motives. The funding we received was for empirical work with psychologists (N=6k+). All data are available on OSF. 👇

This is a reprehensible and blatantly partisan decision that undermines every free speech claim Elon has made about this site. I see eye to eye with Klippenstein on very little, but Twitter simply cannot do this and seriously claim a free speech stance.

Sharing Ken Klippenstein's reaction to being banned by @elonmusk since he can't post here himself anymore:

I enjoyed @BrandonWarmke and @JustinTosi’s book. I disagree with many of the details and I’d choose different examples than they use (I’m not a conservative). But having a counterpoint to the “go out there and change the world” life advice we hear all the time is welcome.

For example, in Nov. 2022, I asked our Dean at a faculty senate meeting what fraction of hires in the last 2-3 years were from FDAP (i.e. the Faculty Diversity Action Plan, our DEI hiring program, which has since been rebranded). His answer: over 90%. From the public minutes: 2/
