20 Yrs ago today the 1st person in a series of 7 at the University of Alberta proved that islet transplantation is a potentially viable approach to treating type 1 diabetes. We have a come a long way since then and continue to make strides towards a cure.

Today the Clinical Islet Lab marked another milestone. Islet Isolation #2500. A tremendous amount of thanks to everyone who has supported and helped us along the way but most importantly to the donors and their families.

Today our team accomplished 2 significant milestones. 300 patients to receive an islet transplant and the 700th allogeneic transplant procedure at a single center. The amount of work that goes into a single transplant is truly staggering (1/n)

99 years ago on this day in 1922, the first injection of insulin was given to 14-year old Leonard Thompson at Toronto General Hospital by Sir Frederick Banting's team. Insulin has helped millions of people manage their diabetes, but it is not a cure.
