Important Update 🇺🇸🍾🦅🫡
the nytimes has solved this problem with the craziest “choose your weighted average” visualization ever printed in a newspaper
I checked which set of weights for gold/silver/bronze medals in the Olympics does a best job at predicting year to year correlations in weighted medal count per country (from 2004 to 2012, since that data was easily available and didn't feature many border changes). The optimal…
I haven’t thought about this a lot but unweighted seems reasonable to me? Like 65 countries sent runners last time, I feel like if you were actually trying to come up with medal weights from a “what is most predictive of medal counts four years from now” it’d be pretty even.
This is an incredible graph format #RealTalk

I’m voting for Kamala Harris to protect abortion rights, low-income people’s access to health care, and the long-term viability of Social Security & Medicare and because I think Donald Trump’s vision of higher deficits, higher tariffs, and a smaller workforce is bad.
NOW ON @SSRN: "GIVE PARENTS THE VOTE," with @KleinfeldJoshua, forthcoming in @NotreDameLRev Parents should be able to cast ballots for their children. And state legislatures can make it happen! From the abstract: Many of America’s most significant policy problems, from failing…
Because people are living inside their main investment rather than monetizing them, we empty nesters consuming extra housing that gives them little value while young families struggle. slowboring.com/p/the-high-cos…
"There is a reason why the scandals surrounding the SAT and ACT generally take the form of rich people paying a ringer to fraudulently take the test for their kid. It’s because dim rich kids can’t outcompete brighter poor kids in that specific arena." mattbruenig.com/2024/02/22/a-p…
In 2022, an hour spent by the IRS auditing someone making $10 million+ yielded $13k on average
My new paper with Alicia Munnell argues for rolling back the federal tax expenditure for retirement plan contributions and redirecting the savings to Social Security. Full repeal would fix roughly 3/4 of Social Security’s long-term funding gap. @aeiecon @RetirementRsrch
The single family home is a terrible investment. Low return, high leverage, illiquid, idiosyncratic risk, value depends on local politics, home value falls with local economy and your job. Build "generational wealth" in stocks, which are far more "accessible." Stop subsidizing!
I hope some conservative economists will step up and explain to the Heritage Foundation (and the Trump administration in waiting) that in fact excessive government regulation can be very harmful and costly. thf_media.s3.amazonaws.com/project2025/20…
It's so funny how the police just stopped doing their jobs when people criticized them for killing people, and meanwhile the IRS Criminal Investigation unit is out here solving the biggest thefts in history with little fan fare, while being constantly demonized by the right
The commitment to addressing our housing shortage from Council is great, let's back em up and speed it along
Our region is experiencing a housing crisis as economic growth continues. At the current rate of growth, Columbus is currently underdeveloped. Last night was a significant step in addressing this issue. dispatch.com/story/news/loc…
A 🧵on Ohio’s death penalty: a bill to ban it has been introduced every session for over a decade. A new version is sponsored by a former supporter of capital punishment. Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt says she now believes “that it is wrong and the time has come to end it”
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (DFL) explains why he rejected Republican lawmakers' attempts to means-test school meals for K-12 students: "The haves and the have-nots in the school lunchroom is not a necessary thing. Just feed our children."
It's gross and the piece on the pork industry in the next tweet is so hard to read I didn't want to retweet without some kind of disclaimer #RealTalk
🚨New Paper🚨 1/2 of kids in the developing world have elevated blood lead. That explains about 1/5th of the test score gap b/n rich & poor countries. cgdev.org/publication/ho… FT coverage here: ft.com/content/18bdb6… with @leecrawfurd @RoryTodd12 @susannahhares & @rsilv_dc
We spend 90% of our time indoors, where air quality is poor. @juan_cambeiro and @_brianpotter show how to change this! The upsides are large: - Reducing harm of future pandemics - Fewer seasonal infections - Less CO2 -> better cognitive functioning statnews.com/2023/06/28/far…
I believe the IRS should have 30,000 new employees focused on optimizing revenue collection because I believe the government should be run like a business.
JUST IN: The IRS had announced they will be hiring 30,000 new IRS agents as they deploy $80 billion in new funding. Instead of hiring 30,000 new IRS Agents, why don’t we hire 30,000 new School Security Guards or 30,000 new Border Patriot Agents? This insanity must be stopped.
700,000 applications for H1-B visas were filed this year—but the cap is 65,000. This means that we are losing out on 635,000 educated, high skilled workers ready to work hard, pay lots of taxes, and build our economy. What an absolute joke
