Rich societies are taut, with all elements mutually dependent & thus rigid. Like many, am unhappy that there would be no real school this Fall. But in countries in wars, students lost years; during the Cultural Revolution 6 years. Losing one semester is not the end of the world.

Brilliant Branko. So true. Especially about Brazil’s confidence prior to 7-1. One question though - have we even reached the Covid Semi-Final? And speaking of #debacles doesn’t Trump’s Covid leadership look a lot like Diego Armando Maradona’s Argentina at WC 2010?

It is hard to find parallels for US debacle on coronavirus. You have to have a strong expectation of success, based on prior data, falsified by a complete and utterly unbelievable defeat. I thought of two: French capitulation to Nazi Germany in 6 weeks. Brazil-Germany 1-7.

Best of luck this year at school. I’m concerned about the teachers and staff, and of course the students, too. I just retired from 33 yrs in classroom, and about half my colleagues have high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, etc. Be safe, Teacher Mama Bear.

Handy guide to help you decide what to do and what NOT to do on the Fourth of July weekend! We don’t have to stop living because of the pandemic. We do have to made smart decisions about how we love. There are plenty of fun and safe things to do!!

For context, there were about 57M deaths globally in 2016. Given all the precautions countries have taken, COVID probably won’t spike that unless it increases 10X again. But it’s become an important new cause of unnatural death, killing ~430k so far. who.int/news-room/fact…

If this doesn’t convince you our healthcare system is woefully broken, I don’t know what will.

A 70 year old coronavirus survivor in Seattle has received a hospital bill charging him $1,122,501.04 for life saving healthcare. The bill is 181 pages long. seattletimes.com/seattle-news/i…

The two most overrated COVID terms right now are "spikes" and "second wave". We never really exited the first wave! And in particular, the places that are seeing big increases right now tend to be places that *didn't* get hit all that hard in March/April and maybe got complacent.

Yesterday at 10 am Fed Chair Powell warned investors that the road to #COVID19 recovery will be long & hard. Markets shrugged. But today @POTUS went ballistic, denounced Powell, claimed the #pandemic will soon end, and now the Dow is in freefall. Nicely done, Mr. #Trump .
