This was an interesting discussion w/ Kim Darroch Will the Senate confirm all the nominations? What to make of Musk’s ‘efficiency’ drive? (We conclude unsurprisingly he’s no Francis Maude…) And Kim vividly describes what deportations mean if we take Trump seriously & literally

Donald Trump's appointments: now what? How does Starmer work with US? Who should be next UK ambo to US? 🎧Fascinating insights from Kim Darroch - UK's former ambassador to US - on @instituteforgov podcast with @DrHannahWhite @AlexGAThomas @jillongovt instituteforgovernment.org.uk/podcast/inside…

Jonathan Powell’s appointment as national security adviser will change the way the job works Read the comment from @AlexGAThomas 👇 instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/jonath…

Well worth a read of this thread

The appointment of Jonathan Powell as the new UK National Security Adviser is interesting for a couple of reasons: the individual and what it means for how the role functions. 🧵gov.uk/government/new…

I agree with you @AlexGAThomas It marks a change in the role, but the machinery of gov’t always flexes to suit a new PM’s wishes, and it suggests that Starmer intends to make full use of the NSC structure, which not all of his recent predecessors did. A🧵with a few thoughts.

Very interested in what you make of this Peter… instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/jonath…

He’s nice about me but more importantly this is very interesting and thoughtful from @josephdevanny

This is a really sharp commentary from @AlexGAThomas on the implications of a political adviser as National Security Adviser. Of the three roles that were rolled into the NSA role in 2010, Powell is clearly closest to the PM’s chief foreign affairs adviser.

But overall, despite retaining the NSA title, this does feel like it is potentially the most significant shift since 2010 in how that role is defined and configured.

Thanks Joe

Great from Jordan on the consequences of Trump for UK government instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/donald…

Trump’s election has immediate consequences for the British state. The securocracy will deal with a very different America. Labour’s agenda becomes harder to deliver. And the new US ambassador must be able to navigate Mar-a-Lago. Me for @instituteforgov instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/donald…
