Very exciting to see @hmtreasury has published its Areas of Research Interest - this should help researchers outside govt identify the questions policymakers most need answers to, to help inform fiscal and economic policy and help target research funding assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/67320709…

Trump’s election has immediate consequences for the British state. The securocracy will deal with a very different America. Labour’s agenda becomes harder to deliver. And the new US ambassador must be able to navigate Mar-a-Lago. Me for @instituteforgov instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/donald…

The Chancellor announced at the Budget that she would be moving to a Public Sector Net Financial Liabilities rule (PSNFL - known as persnuffle to many economists). @gemmatetlow explains the thinking behind the move ⤵️
Trust me that I say other stuff too
Is Rachel Reeves’ budget bad – or good – for business? @Gilesyb says it is far too soon to make judgments about what it means for business instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/rachel…
Brilliant to see our report feature in this list - and in great company with others I've enjoyed this year.
Congratulations to @instituteforgov Their report: From the Ground Up. How the government can build more homes has been selected by our Editorial Panel as one of the 'must read' reports of 2024, thinkhouse.org.uk/reports/2024/ #ukhousing #housingresearch #housingpolicy
Rachel Reeves has made welcome changes to the fiscal rules @gemmatetlow says Reeves has made some long-overdue improvements to the fiscal rules and framework – but like her predecessors, the chancellor has left herself little headroom instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/rachel…
Super chart from @shainasangha comparing this tax rise to previous increases
My take for @instituteforgov A genuinely big budget that aligns the government’s fiscal numbers more closely with their rhetoric and ambition instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/rachel…
But in the longer-run, the OBR judges that public investment boosts potential output, including by crowding in complementary private investment. Really helpful to see the longer-term impacts considered, rather than just focussing on the near term impacts.
What does Rachel Reeves' budget mean for public services? @NJ_Davies says an accelerated schools rebuilding programme and higher NHS capital budget is a welcome step after decades of underinvestment. 📖Read our report on fixing public services for more instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publication/fi…
Two charts that show this is a genuinely consequential budget that changes the direction on spending
