Today on Bluesky was as much fun as Twitter in 2009.

Watched the video to Sonic Youth’s Teenage Riot last night. How thrilling I found that in 1988 - a fabulously constructed montage of cool cult figures - Sun Ra, Johnny Thunders, Blixa, Patti, Mike Watt, Joni Mitchell, Nastassja Kinski, Daniel Johnston… youtu.be/tPytYrYqDbA?si…

I have lost about the same amount of followers here as I’ve gained on Blue Sky in the last week. A good sign. Straddling both for the moment but keen to make a final break. Anyway, I’m over there on @johnniejohnstone.bsky.social

Bought OTD in 1969: the first album, the first mix. Love this record - it remains my favourite NY - for its intricately arranged psychedelia (thx Jack Nitzsche) and deep introductory dive into the world of Neil; intense! The Loner is immense

I miss the days when every British film and TV show had the same eight actors in and it wasn't because of who their parents were.

Charles Hawtrey alert! He stars alongside Adam Faith and Sid James in What a Whopper! (1961) @TalkingPicsTV 8.55am this morning #CharlesHawtrey #SidJames

We were really delighted to see this listed @tnpcollection - nice work son! We were lucky enough to spend a little time with Johnnie and Josef K for our Music Maps podcast - listen here and then buy the book! open.spotify.com/episode/2JfQvG…

Blimey, was just thinking how much I agreed with the selection of Will Hodgkinson’s incredible Street Level Superstar as No.1, then noticed I had sneaked in at no.18! Thank you Rough Trade!!

Lawrence and I will slink back into the shadows where we belong soon enough, but first, please watch this with the sound on… Thank you Rough Trade, it means the world.

#NowPlaying Such a strange, beautiful record. Cut in 1965 and with a title like that you might expect something like Archie Shepp’s Four For Trane but no. This is melodic post-bop trios drawing on the influence of Mingus and Bird. Charlie Mariano is a real revelation on sax. 🙌🎷

Bought OTD in 1971: this was a big album for me so I like the whole thing (even the Mike Love track that everyone hates). There are so many delights - Don’t Go Near the Water, Surf’s Up, Looking at Tomorrow (phasing) but the stand out is Carl’s Feel Flows

Please read this. It's literally been 8 years in the writing. The first wave of tech disruption of democracy 2016-2024 is over. What starts now is something much, much worse: the age of information chaos. 1/ theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Fave Costello LP. I love Blood And Chocolate too - a fizzing upgrade on This Year’s Model - and Imperial Bedroom (his Forever Changes mission), but this is the one. Quality songwriting, brimful of hooks, genre-hopping versatility, sharp social commentary. Magic.

At the end of August 2024 Blue Skies had 6 million followers. Now it has 18 million, and is lot livelier as a result. It feels like the original Twitter, with generous, informed, gracious discussion and not infested by robots, right wing incels and puerile propagandists.
