The Grammys are a concept by which we measure our pain

During the two years that I earned my MFA in writing at a LA based university - folks there were obsessed with trying to break into Hollywood - not me, I was trying to get out!

“Battle of Evermore? Sandy Denny was a friend, so she just came into the studio and killed it - it wasn’t even a one day thing - it was one hour!” “Bonzo was listening to all kinds of stuff, Buddy Rich, a little bit of Alphonse Mouzon, a touch of Bernard Purdie” - Robert Plant

“Yeats is gone; and now Joyce. But of one thing I am sure - whatever be the rights and wrongs of the relations between England and Ireland, I know Ireland will continue to take the finest and most ironical revenges on us: she will go on giving us great men of letters”

I heard drummer Mtume give the best description ever (as he's talking to Stanley Crouch) regarding the critical backlash against Miles Davis early 70's music - "most of the people criticizing that music, well, it's like inviting kool-aid drinkers to a wine tasting contest"

Upon first hearing Duran Duran’s 1982 hit “Hungry like the Wolf” - Bob Dylan turned to the person next to him and said, “the kids [today] are getting a raw deal, nobody’s telling them anything through music any more”

Lou Donaldson has died - in 2005, I got his 1969 Say It Loud! LP released on CD for the first time - Recorded for Blue Note with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, guitarist Jimmy Ponder, organist Charles Earland and drummer Leo Morris, the songs on Say It Loud! are dynamically delicious
