“Sometimes it’s hard to see his face everywhere. And sometimes it’s heartwarming to see he’s not forgotten.” The parents of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich speaking movingly to @ABC about his detention in Russia on false charges. Free Evan
We’re in the Moscow courtroom where Evan Gershkovich is appealing the extension of his pre-trial detention. It’s 12 weeks since the Wall Street Journal reporter was arrested in Russia and charged with espionage. He & his employer vehemently deny the charge.
At the start of the Ukraine war, much of Russia's cultural elite fled the country, including playwrights, filmmakers and artists. A year on, they have established themselves in new cities across the world, a century after a previous similar exodus. bit.ly/3LWgINQ
Much of Russia's cultural elite has fled the country since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I met the artists creating new work - and new identities - abroad @TheWorld theworld.org/stories/2023-0…
Devastating news. Arman was a brilliant journalist and a wonderful person. Thinking of all our colleagues covering Ukraine today. He will be deeply missed.
We are devastated to learn of the death of AFP video journalist Arman Soldin in eastern Ukraine today. All of our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.
I tried to put Evan’s wit and wisdom, and all of our pain, onto one page. This is my letter to our brilliant friend, who as of today has spent a full month in jail. on.ft.com/3ViNddu
Thank you to @thetimes for running my story on @evangershkovich’s family and continuing to spread the word about the injustice of his detainment. Evan’s parents are clear-eyed—and very, very courageous. #IStandWithEvan #FreeEvan #Journalismisnotacrime thetimes.co.uk/article/evan-g…
Our friend and colleague Evan in a Moscow courtroom as he is investigated on bogus espionage charges. Maximum sentence 20 years. We can see the marks from the handcuffs on his wrists. But he is still smiling. #FreeEvan
Poland is putting LGBTQ activists on trial - they urge Europe not to forget them as Warsaw improves ties with the West over Ukraine vice.com/en/article/7kx… @VICEWorldNews
From the @NYTimes: “We’re devoting today’s newsletter to @evangershkovich — to keep sustained attention on his plight and to highlight the larger threat that it represents” #IStandWithEvan #FreeEvan nytimes.com/2023/04/10/bri…
They play a key role in Easter celebrations - but their voices are all too often sidelined. Interviewed some lambs for @TheWorld & this story about Polish cheese theworld.org/stories/2023-0…
Poland’s total ban on abortion has led to women dying after being denied terminations. Now, many are choosing not to have any children at all.trib.al/zCiwGo0
"these last few awful days, I’ve also experienced something else: the outburst of solidarity for Evan by Russians who themselves have struggled to tell their country’s story and make it a better place, often at great cost" beautiful piece by @antontroian nytimes.com/2023/04/04/wor…
The birth rate in Poland has dropped to its lowest level in years - with many women citing the draconian abortion law as a reason for not wanting to get pregnant. My report from Warsaw for @VICEWorldNews vice.com/en/article/z3m…
A young American journalist is spending another night in Moscow's grim Lefortovo prison. But @evangershkovich is a reporter, not a spy. As Nataliya says: "He loved journalism, and a mere suggestion that he may have been spying on Russia is insulting and simply absurd"
Thinking of Evan and his family. “A new addition to Moscow’s increasingly demoralised foreign press corps, Evan stood out for his enthusiasm and boundless curiosity.” telegraph.co.uk/world-news/202…
Shocked by what has happened today. Evan Gershkovich is an experienced, well-respected journalist, officially accredited in Moscow. As the Wall Street Journal put it, he’s a “trusted and dedicated reporter.” For him to be facing espionage charges is simply unbelievable.
My friend and thoroughly professional journalist @evangershkovich has been arrested by the FSB on obviously bogus espionage charges. Journalism is not a crime. Evan should be released immediately themoscowtimes.com/2023/03/30/rus…
You know I love talking about hope and I even teach hope-based communications to civil society. But to mark this particularly shitty day, I spoke to @theo_merz for @VICE about the hate that I feel and what needs to happen for it to change. Stay toxic✌️vice.com/en/article/dy7…
A year of war in Ukraine has unleashed a hatred towards Russia that will last for generations. How are Ukrainians dealing with this rage now - and where does it go when the conflict ends? My piece for @VICEWorldNews vice.com/en/article/dy7…
