New paper out led by student @powellecology reviews how resource partitioning structures benthic cyanobacterial mats. Check it out! doi.org/10.1111/jpy.13… @PSAAlgae @JPhycology
So happy to be a part of this work with @EmilyHDuVal @Eliz_Hobson and @clynfitzpatrick! We show that mistakes that females make when trying to infer what others find attractive can lead to the maintenance of variation in preferences and traits, among other cool patterns!
"I'll have what she's having!" Why do females choose particular mates? @EmilyHDuVal @servedio1 &co propose that mate choices rely on context-dependent social information, explaining major puzzles in the study of #SexualSelection. #PLOSBiology plos.io/46EHVgN
Priority review for my open postdoc position starts next week after July 1!
Postdoc opening in my lab @UNC_Biology for a bioinformatician! Opportunities for lab and fieldwork. marecology.com @marecology
"My name is Madelina Marquez, and I'm a 1st-year Ph.D. student in Dr. Sophie McCoy’s lab (UNC). My research aims to study didymo photosynthesis/respiration mechanisms by assessing daytime and nighttime dynamics as well as quantify changes in final rates across mat senescence"

New paper out: Crustose coralline algae can contribute more than corals to reef carbonate budgets. nature.com/articles/s4324… Thanks for leading an amazing collab @chrisecornwall @ComeauSteeve
Caribbean #parrotfishes just love eating those cyanobacterial mats! Another preprint out by @coralecoguy biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #BCMs #HAB @MarEcology
At #2022SVP hunting for a postdoc starting in fall of 2023? I'm looking to bring on someone to @UMichPaleo w/ background in comparative methods and morphometrics. Familiarity w/ fishes &/or function a plus. I'm around Friday evening and Saturday--DM if you want to chat!
So proud of my recently minted PhD grad @coralecoguy
Defended my dissertation yesterday! Glad @sophiejmccoy and Ethan Cissell were there to celebrate with me! And happy to have had so many others there as well!
Excited to announce Dr. Manning! @coralecoguy successfully defended his dissertation on Friday - so proud of you, Josh!

Curious about #parrotfish territoriality and species coexistence on #reefs? New preprint: Spatial interactions between parrotfishes and implications for species coexistence by my student @coralecoguy biorxiv.org/content/10.110… @MarEcology
So excited that my first educational research publication is out in #PLOSONE: Are synchronous chats a silver lining of emergency remote instruction? Text-based chatting is disproportionately favored by women dx.plos.org/10.1371/journa… #EDUSTEM @SehoyaCotner @cissyballen
Another exciting preprint up - Predation, community asynchrony, and metacommunity stability in cyanobacterial mats. doi.org/10.1101/2022.1… @MarEcology #BCMs #HAB
#coralreef benthic cyanobacterial mats carry a top heavy viral load. New preprint: Top-heavy trophic structure within benthic viral dark matter doi.org/10.1101/2022.1… @MarEcology #BCMs #HAB #virus
Postdoc opening in evolutionary genetics/genomics in my colleague @danielrmatute lab at UNC - check it out!
The Matute lab is recruiting several postdocs to work on evolutionary genetics/genomics broadly defined. The job posts will come soon but feel free to get in touch to discuss possibilities. Please RT.
Corals are the "underwater skyline of reefs," home to many organisms like sponges and octocorals that are valuable for water filtration and natural products, and that are used by fish. Explore more about ongoing coral research in UNC's biology department: college.unc.edu/2022/07/coral-…

Cyanobacterial mats as benthic reservoirs and vectors for coral black band disease pathogens - New paper out @ESAApplications by the McCoy Lab @MarEcology in collab with @STINAPABonaire!
Exciting work on the viability of carbon capture and storage by my former colleagues @PlymouthMarine!
Big news! We've been involved in a pioneering study that suggests storing CO2 under the sea using #CCS is viable & safe. CCS is a key strategy for keeping the global temperature rise below 1.5C. Read about the study here: pml.ac.uk/News/How-viabl… @NERCscience @NOCnews
Just in: NOAA is forecasting a smaller-than-average #HarmfulAlgalBloom for western #LakeErie this summer. This year’s bloom is expected to measure 3.5, with a potential range of 2-4 on the severity index — whereas last year’s bloom was measured at a 6. noaa.gov/news-release/b…
