🌿🇨🇫Women in Cassava🌿🇳🇬 Research talent of young women scientists is helping to boost development of the #cassava crop & transforming African agriculture, with vital new insights into maximizing the agronomic potential of the crop #WomenInSTEM #womeninscience #ScienceSHEroes
🇳🇬🌿💧Water & Soil💧🌿🇳🇬 Growing vigorous #cassava needs good soil & water management, which is why PhD student from #Nigeria, Omolara Olabisi is using a penetrometer to determine optimal tillage practices. Her ultimate goals are to maximise cassava yield while conserving soils

My heart can't 😭 This Muslim couple, owners of a corner shop in Scotland, assembled Corona Virus relief packages for the elderly and those in need so and delivered them around their village for FREE THIS IS HUMANITY WE NEED MORE OF THIS ❤
The Sustainable Agroecosystems group of Jo Six has recieved @snsf_ch funding for the new science communication project “Edible research goes storytelling: Participative design of an interactive art-science exhibition on food value chains.” Congratulations! #usysscience

In life, there are a few critical things you do not have control over; such as where you are born into, your stature, the weather, how people feel about you etc. For things you have control over, be intentional & deliberate. Take responsibility for your actions & blame others less
Do you have any other idea how to overcome this messed up system? Happy about other suggestions.
Also, universities need to stop hiring based on impact factor because there are lots of brilliant scientists out there whose hypothesis did just not turn out to be true. But again, the significance of our data says nothing about our quality as a scientist.
So, what can we do? E.g. @chrisdc77 promotes Registered Reports where we pre-register our research plans and if the hypothesis is worth investigating we get a guaranteed publication, even if the data are not significant.
And as PhDs we just don't have the time and energy to publish data that don't bring our career forward. In my opinion, we should put more value on the hypothesis rather than on the result.
This lead to the reproducibility crisis in science as well as to a complete waste of money because non-significant results stay in the drawers. Experiments are repeated countless times by many labs because we don't let each other know that it has already been done.
This system is neither in the interest of society, nor of scientists or of research itself. We publish things that are fashionable right now and ultimately science suffers because the value of our research is mainly determined by sales of a magazine.
At the same time, we allow journals and impact factors to determine our value as a research and ultimately our careers. We would we hire new professors based on impact factor when clearly the impact factor is on based on popularity rather than quality per se?
It's madness! We give journals our work for free, we review other scientist's work for free and we pay to read other people's work which has been funded by society, so ultimately by us! That in itself is crazy and I guess unheard of.
