It's pub day for "Odesa at Dawn"! Thank you @VQ_Books and @KatyDerbyshire, you guys are the best.

Wishing a wonderful publication day to @sally_mcgrane, author of our very first English-language original, ODESA AT DAWN. It's been a joy working on this extraordinary book with you, Sally. Please imagine a champagne bottle smashing as we proclaim: long may she sail.

Enjoyed helping out at Liverpool Uni's "Europeans and European Culture in the Liverpool City Region" and showcasing some books I've worked on. A lady from Odesa asked me to take her photo with "Odesa at Dawn" by @sally_mcgrane so she could send it to her mother. 😊

Russian glide bombs severely damage the iconic building of Derzhprom, the symbol of Kharkiv and one of Europe’s first skyscrapers that housed the Ukrainian government after it was completed in 1928. Derzhprom survived the Nazis but not Putin. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derzhprom

Spent a couple of months working on this longread about Pablo González / Pavel Rubtsov, the Spanish journalist accused of being a GRU spy. Hopefully it goes some way to answering a few of the questions around Pablo. theguardian.com/world/2024/oct…

Heartbroken to see reports that Viktoria Roshchyna, one of the most gifted journalists to cover the war in Ukraine, has died in a Russian prison. Her father has worked tirelessly to get her out, as have many of her friends and colleagues. hromadske.ua/viyna/232707-z…

Russland tötet weiter. Heute Morgen trifft der tägliche Raketen-Terror u.a. Lwiw im Westen der Ukraine. Mindestens sieben Menschen sind ums Leben gekommen, darunter Kinder. Warum schweigen so viele im Westen? Wo bleiben die Reaktionen auf die Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit?

Thinking about Evan today as he is sentenced to 16 years in prison on fake charges for espionage. Evan was taken by Russia as a hostage and should be released immediately. He is a dedicated journalist, a kind person, and a friend and we want to see him at home with his family.

Russia hits hospitals. Over and over. Country to country. "Putin sent warplanes to systematically target hospitals During the siege of Alepp, more than 440 civilians died, including 90 children. The attacks killed newborn babies, doctors, and students." foreignpolicy.com/2022/04/18/ukr…

Scenes are too grim to describe here at Ohmatdyt children’s hospital. Somewhere in the foliage lies a woman’s corpse.

As this footage shows, this was not debris or an errant air defense missile: Russia clearly and deliberately targeted Ukraine’s main children’s hospital.

The moment a Russian missile strikes Kyiv’s main children’s hospital Okhmatdyt.

These are sick kids being treated on the street after a missile hit Ukraine’s main children’s hospital today in Kyiv. Imagine your child was being treated for cancer and a missile hits the hospital. It’s unfathomable.

If you found the far-right views expressed among the well-heeled on Sylt surprising, perhaps this piece from wealthy Bavaria (my @ObserverUK debut) will be of interest. Germany's AfD has a firm foothold among Kaufbeuren voters, but so does a lively, diverse pro-democracy movement

Ahead of next month’s European elections deep-seated fears have gripped a significant share of the electorate in one of the most affluent pockets of Europe’s top economy & delivered it to the far-right AfD writes ⁦@doberah⁩ in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria theguardian.com/world/article/…

Horrifying to see this Russian attack on the Vivat printing house in Kharkiv. Among the best in Ukraine, Vivat bravely continued to operate during the full scale invasion and now needs a lot of support. My deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims

7 employees of the printing house Vivat killed in the Russian strike on Kharkiv. They were operators/brochure makers: - Tetiana Khrapina - Roman Strohyi - Svitlana Ryzhenko - Olha Kurasova - Olena Ninadovska - Hanna Mynaieva - Dmytro Shylo RIP… #StopRussia #StandWithUkraine

Although no news in USA seem interested in reporting it, Russia bombed Odesa again today: multiple casualties, including children, scores of wounded and dead. The ballistic missile got into a location Odesans like to call Harry Potter’s Castle. Putin is a Voldemort? You tell me.

Evan's appeal has been rejected again. He will remain in the high-security Lefortovo prison till at least June 30. Evan has now spent almost 400 days in a tiny cell. insufferable

Evan gave a thumbs-up when asked by the press how he was. And later shared this moment with his lawyers after the judge announced the decision. The legal team said they held out hope the next hearing would be the last.
