174. Labour should be celebrating in the world’s best city next week. A stonking majority after an existential crisis. @institutegc partnered with Yonder & brill @AndrewCooper__ to understand its winning but fragile coalition. How to keep it together? Transformation. 🧵👇

Here it is. In one chart from excellent @willydunn’s New Statesman newsletter, the case for pensions reform in Britain 👇

Maybe my least controversial China take ever: the UK urgently needs to understand China better. As the UK's China audit kicks off, our new @InstituteGC paper looks at three big things that could set up the UK's China capabilities for long-term success🧵institute.global/insights/geopo…

Talking pension reform doesn’t do any favours socially but can work wonders unlocking billions in investment. It’s near criminal that Canadian pensioners own more of Britain than our own do. Rachel Reeves is right to reform. We @institutegc made the case for it some time ago 👇

What was the most clarifying political moment of the last decade? For me, it was when Tony Blair said we should prioritise giving as many people as possible a single-dose of the covid vaccine and the subsequent 'expert' backlash. Turns out he was right and they were wrong.

As I suggested to new Tory shadow ministers, perhaps the former minister for common sense can help them find some. This Labour government has chosen investment over decline. Will the Conservative Party really vote against it? If so, what would they do differently? 👇

100 days in my role as Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, and I’ve been out and about in every corner of our city. I’ve visited 17 boroughs, undertaken 125+ official engagements and had hundreds of conversations on how we can deliver a fairer, greener London ✌🏾🌍

Great to see the PM vow to treat organised crime as a national security threat and give the police enhanced powers to tackle it. As our recent @InstituteGC paper w/ @CrestAdvisory shows, an approach modelled on counter-terrorism is the way to go to disrupt the gangs 1/

Once again for this like Sharron who appear to be hurtling down the conspiratorial rabbit hole on this. 15 minute cities means you have amenities and services you need within a 15 minute walk. It does not mean you are not allowed to leave certain areas. Jesus.

I’m so not up for 15 min communities. It will not work for families with active kids doing all sorts of activities. And whilst the little people get to live confined with little choice those in the WEF fly in their jets & on their yachts telling ‘ the people’ to reduce their…

By fixing the foundations, we can get on with the job of growing our economy. Today’s £500m investment from @Prologis is another vote of confidence in the UK’s life sciences sector. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Revealing Badenoch interview with @bbclaurak: ➡️Suggests Reform “a symptom” of Tory failure. The more she chases this vote, the happier Lab & Libs will be. 📊Cited OBR as authoritative source now they’re saying things Tories agree with. Maybe they’re getting impartiality right!

The AI revolution will change everything, it’s happening faster than we think and politics is largely ignoring it. An excellent piece from Tom Friedman in his @nytimes column - including a passing reference to TB’s book “On Leadership” and last week’s conversation in D.C.

The OBR’s growth forecast has to be the floor for this govt: 2025: 2% 2026: 1.8% 2027: 1.5% 2028: 1.5% 2029: 1.6% Transforming planning, reforming pensions & rolling out enabling tech (data, digital ID) can supercharge these numbers - which means more ££ for investment & pay.

£6.7bn to the Department for Education for capital spending. This is the one thing I was looking out for in the budget and I’m glad it’s being delivered. The days of working class kids being taught in cold mobile huts has to end. I saw firsthand what it does to potential.
