#WorldFoodDay spotlight: @SWhitfield85 tackles inequalities against #GlobalSouth farmers with the development of a framework to help researchers and policymakers ensure that future transformations in agriculture are both just and fair. Read: leeds.ac.uk/global/dir-rec… @WHO @WHOAFRO
While crops were lost early this year in Southern African countries due to droughts, Rebecca’s fieldwork in Kenya found that most East African countries had experienced the opposite, with too much rainfall leading to flooding of farmlands. Both resulted in low yield records.
Ahead of #COP29, she has suggested an agenda for stakeholders to prioritise agriculture for nutrition instead of focusing on calorie-only, staple crops. Read more 🌱⬇️ climate.leeds.ac.uk/climate-action…
The integrated Future Estimator for Emissions and Diets (iFEED) modelling framework highlights the consequences of climate change and nutrition security (meeting vitamin and mineral needs) in East and Southern African countries that rely mostly on maize as a staple food 🌽
This year has presented us with several unusual weather patterns due to a change in climate which have affected food production worldwide 🌧️☀️ This #WorldFoodDay, researcher Dr @rsarku1 discusses climate action for agriculture and food systems ahead of #COP29 👇
In addition to these events: 🌾 @rsarku1 will be following negotiations on food systems and agriculture during week 1 and 🌱 @agailani90 will be focusing on industrial decarbonisation during week 2
For those working 'overtime', here's my 'takeaway' – a brief reflection on Food, Agriculture, and Food Systems at #COP28. link.medium.com/TZmnwu0AGFb
Research Fellow Dr Rebecca Sarku has been part of the organising team.
Rebecca Sarku is a Research Fellow in Climate Change and Food Systems. Her area of work includes tracking the politics of climate change adaptation and agriculture.
In advance of #WorldFoodDay, Dr Rebecca Sarku (@rsarku1) celebrates the collaborative and innovative approach @UnivesityLeeds is taking towards developing resilient global food systems for a healthier future 🔽 forstaff.leeds.ac.uk/news/article/8…
So much gaps on The #KJWA process with Future topics largely left out and @FoodSystems getting contested. Food Loss & Waste, Sustainable Consumption & Production and Alternative Diet are very important for NAPs and resilient agri-food systems within planetary boundaries. @WWF
And @rsarku1 led this analysis of justice discourse in the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture, showing that justice has remained peripheral to how agricultural change in envisioned under the UNFCCC: frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
@rsarku1 : "I celebrate loss & damage, but if loss & damage is not connected to real needs on the ground - then I think that we are far away from celebrating" #cop27
Next up @rsarku1 talking us through the 'Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture' at COP27 Rebecca offers important reflections on #COP27 negotiations regarding the wording around #justice and #equity of smallholder farmers in GS in discussions around #foodsystems and #agriculture
We have an exciting panel of speakers for this important and timely discussion: 1. @TOClimates - Prof in Global Security Challenges @POLISatLeeds will first provide an overview of the (increasing) complexity of global climate negotiations #cop27

COP27: Historic Loss and Damage Fund Takes COP27 to the Edge - ipsnews.net/2022/11/cop27-…
Opening our #FoodAgPavilion event at #COP27 tonight, @rsarku1 speaks on the need for agricultural transformation - “Transformation has become a buzz word, we hear it everywhere. But transformation without justice isn’t transformation.” cop27foodpavilion.cgiar.org
"Historical justice has to be a bigger part of the @UNFCCC's work on agriculture. This includes land grabbing, slavery, workers' rights, and corporate takeovers" - Rebecca Sarku, @UniversityLeeds at #COP27. #ClimateResilience Initiative @BiovIntCIAT_eng @irri @CGIARAfrica
