Then of course there's heavy PR spin regarding trace amounts and we'll see phrases such as "quantities not enough to be performance enhancing." Yes, at the time the sample was given. Some drugs have no cut-off and due to their nature ANY amount is a positive. e.g. Clostobol.
Doses and glow time (the period in which an athlete will trigger an AAF) are calculated to the minute and if they do slip up or get caught out there's plenty of excuses: x.com/SportCampaign/…
The list of excuses for failing or not taking a test is long and inventive and some are less believable than others.
WADA and NADOs provide a framework via testing and the biological passport (which appears to be as effective as the 50% heamatocrit limit) within which athletes can (and do) dope to a certain level, stay within the trigger points, pass the tests and loudly proclaim to be "clean."
