In the foothills north of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince there's a small village called Cazal (or Casele). This name is a curious one, and it tells us an interesting story about the history of the region. /1

What's happening? Ongoing imperialism and all the other systemic oppressions in #signlanguages #linguistics Since 2020, at least three hearing scholars in Europe have been awarded substantial + prestigious grants to research the phonology and morphology of signed languages

A popular exercise is counting the number of deaf scholars (especially deaf linguists in particular) with PhDs and then either rejoicing or saying we need to do better. However, we need more than a superficial count. (Longish) thread:

Caribbean perspectives on sign language documentation 👏 love to see it!

Made a video with @kristianali_ and @ird2004 about our experiences documenting Caribbean sign languages. It's for #ICLDC7 where we'll be talking on a panel about complex relationships in sign language documentation work youtu.be/qV4sFVaNHnY.

Sadly, Providencia, a Colombian but largely English-speaking island in the Caribbean Sea with a strong Caribbean identity, was devastated by Hurricane Iota in November. 98% of infrastructure and 80% of houses are gone. Please follow @ProArchipielago & donate to the recovery fund!

Love how there were no major hurricanes in the Caribbean in 2020 ❤️❤️❤️.

Sign language friends. Many of you may know of Providence through the research on Providence Island Sign Language. The current situation is desperate. Please support if you can.

Providence Island, Colombia has been devastated by Hurricane #Iota. There is currently no electricity or water, little food, and almost all homes have been destroyed. If you can, please donate to support relief work. checkout.wompi.co/l/VPOS_XM812U

On this day in history, October 25, 1983, US President Ronald Reagan, citing the threat posed to the US citizens on the island, ordered over 2000 troops to invade the island of Grenada. The US was assisted by a coalition of right leaning Caribbean governments. Thread below

Beautiful work showcasing Caribbean sign languages 😍

Check this video edited by @kristianali_, featuring @ird2004 and members of signing communities around the Caribbean talking about their languages. It was made (very quickly!) for @SCL_1972's Virtual Caribbean Language Festival. Transcript in the comments. youtube.com/watch?v=RDwviB…
