So many HR departments approach recruiting with no strategy, frantically throwing spaghetti at the wall hoping something sticks. Stop, sit down, and create a plan. Start simple: What are you hiring for, who would fit those needs and where do these people live (on and offline)?

Unstructured job interviews (where you have no set evaluation criteria) are worse than useless: they lead to worse hiring than no interviews at all. We are not good judges: candidates giving random "yes"/"no" answers are rated the same quality as ones where answers were real!

There is a strong association between the number of connections a founder has on LinkedIn and the amount of funding their startup raises. I would be shocked if this was causal (though LinkedIn can be useful), but it underlines how important social networks are in startup success.

I announced to all dept heads its my goal to have our call center reps be their bench for entry level talent. When they get promoted to Sr CSR, they will pick a path (i.e. product) to do a mini internship to gain exposure/experience. Then go back share with the CS team.
