1/7 Discussing low-resource languages we highlighted that the amount of the language data doesn’t correlate with the number of their speakers. The number of speakers isn’t the main factor that affects language vitality, the other factors also play a part. Which ones? The 🧵

We discussed a lot how to tackle the lack of data in NLP, but why this lack appears? In this thread, we will look at the concept of “”low-resourcedness” and try to understand the reasons of it 🧵

Ever since the Kidd&Garcia paper came out surveying which languages are represented in major child language journals, I've been thinking "huh, 103 languages...this sounds like a #100papers project" So! Here's an ongoing thread reading one paper per language. I call it #103papers

"There is at least one article published in child language journals on a total of 103 languages. Thus, assuming that there are 7,000 natural languages, the four major child language journals have published articles on around 1.47% of them."

Twitter linguists, how do you use Wordle in your introductory linguistics classes?

I posted my WAIL 2022 presentation on reinventing the process of documenting child language <youtu.be/An4vQtR1Pv8>. I welcome any and all suggestions.

A graph showing how little is known about child language. Documentation is only available for ~200 child languages.
