Dr Ribeiro shows that deforestation & management fires in Amazonia and Cerrado are controlled by time since land use transition. Fire activity tend to drop over time where mechanized agriculture gets established. But agri drives fire activity before deforestation happens

Our paper featured this week on @CommsEarth shows that the time since land-use transition is a main driver of fire activity in the Amazon-Cerrado agricultural frontier. Check the full paper rdcu.be/dzffq (1/5)🧵

Our new paper out today: “Emergency policies are not enough to resolve Amazonia’s fire crises” Remember when the sky in São Paulo got dark in the middle of the afternoon because of dense smoke clouds created by fires in the Amazon in 2019? nature.com/articles/s4324…

A striking finding is that even though burned areas decline with agricultural intensification, the fire activity associated with deforestation for pasturelands stays persistently elevated after conversion.

After a severe drought, it is impressive to see how Amazonian fires have been severely neglected during #COP28 by Brazil, despite the enormous CO2 amounts they release in the atmosphere. More on the subject here (use cc captions for English): youtu.be/jy3X8jwB6U4?si…

Important paper showing the why climate models project changes in precipitation and air temperature for the Amazon. It turns out that CO2 accounts for most it — either by changing circulation patterns or by creating feedbacks between the vegetation and atmosphere. Congrats, Yue!

Interested in why Amazonia will become a drought hotspot in the future? Our new @NatureWaterJnl paper found at least 40% of rainfall decline can be attributed to CO2 physiology and deforestation in SSP scenarios. Free read-only rdcu.be/dkR4Z, nature.com/articles/s4422…
