These findings surprised us and led us to see the limitation of the "uncanny valley" hypothesis and the mind perception approach. Check out our new paper at Cognition!

In 2016, my PhD advisor (Bertram Malle) and I found that people were more likely to take the visual perspective of a human than a robot. That paper has been cited a few dozen times. But we were wrong. It really depends on how human-looking the robot is. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Just 2 days into its school year, a Florida county has asked 440 students to quarantine after 51 students and staff tested positive for COVID. The district requires masks — but a governor's order allows parents to bypass that rule for their children. n.pr/3xSmJCh

Human behavior is powerfully guided by social and moral norms. #Robots that enter human societies must therefore behave in norm-conforming ways as well. In this work, we investigate how robots should represent, activate, and learn social norms! researchgate.net/publication/34…

I prepared some quick advice on experimental design for the "good citizens of robotics" RSS workshop -- it's flawed in many ways, but if e.g. factorial design is something you don't normally think about, consider watching youtu.be/S0SbrUKcedQ

Love this paper!

Linguistic analysis of language from police body cameras during traffic stops. Analysis reveals a considerable difference between how white and nonwhite individuals are treated. White folk cautioned about safety; black folk told to keep hands on wheel. h/t @MikeShor for posting

After months of waiting for the embassy to re-open, given the latest US immigration news it’s confirmed I will no longer be able to take up my postdoc with @williamstome at @MinesRobotics - so US based friends I encourage you to apply and go in my place! 😜

🚨🚨🚨 Looking to hire, like, real soon 🚨🚨🚨 Thanks to Trump/COVID Immigration policy, an all-star incoming postdoc is no longer physically able to come to the US to join my lab 😭 So... looks like I'm hiring again! Official posting going up soon, but for now: 1/4
