Didn’t expect to get this as a reaction from a senior colleague on my and @WeedageLotte Linear Algebra course that had flipped classroom, interactive videos, group work, etc…😳😳 Here we write about the course, with a link to all material: ris.utwente.nl/ws/portalfiles…

Friday I presented our preprint (arxiv.org/abs/2405.0820) at the @NetSciNL symposium. Super nice talks, thanks @nellylitvak et al. for organizing :)

This one is really funny 😂

On my way home from the annual @NetSciNL symposium in Eindhoven - great day, interesting speakers, and nice to see such a big network science community in 🇳🇱. And: happy and honoured to receive the Young Talent award of @NetSciNL 😊

4 pillars of alternative grading. Illustration for my upcoming article on how we implemented competency-based grading in a large basic math course. By a very talented student artist Mara Chelărescu. @RobertTalbert #alternativegrading

Happy to share our new article in Scientific Reports. We propose machine learning methods to identify the mechanisms that drive the growth of dynamic networks (age, fitness, and preferential attachment). @LourensTouwen doi.org/10.1038/s41598…

There are better ways to grade, here is a very useful page with resources.

I'm giving a keynote at the annual symposium of the Association Québécoise de Pédagogie Collégiale next month, and today I updated the resource page I typically share. Hopefully this is useful for anyone rethinking grading. docs.google.com/document/d/1is…

In this article we tell about how we use the problem-solving approach developed by @eric_mazur in our linear algebra course.

Do we teach the art of mathematical argument to our students? Do we, really? Our new article with @WeedageLotte about our attempts to teach (and grade) what we preach @UTwente #highereducation #students #Mathematics ris.utwente.nl/ws/portalfiles…

Grades are evil. They give students exactly the wrong incentive, and grading process kills my soul. We can do so much better! Thank you ⁦@dccmath⁩ and ⁦@RobertTalbert⁩ for the great book! Let’s convert #higher-education to alternative grating. amazon.com/Grading-Growth…

Learning (If we really cared about learning, we'd take the time to go over the mistakes of a student. Instead, complete silence and then a numerical grade follows a final exam, without much other context.)

I was very upset with students’ silly answers to my open question. But it can be worse! A young colleague got an answer, “can you undress?”. What is happening to our relationship with the students and what to do? #highereducation #students

University teachers are experts in content but often not in pedagogy and EdTech. And this is needed for modern courses. Solution? Make every course a project run by a team. Here is our article about it at @UTwente utwente.nl/en/eemcs/news/…
