So glad to take part in this @BBCRadio4 documentary on sanctions, alongside the leading thinkers on the subject. I talked about the double-edged impact of sanctions in the experience of African states. Really thoughtful work by @DuncanWeldon and producer Jac Phillimore @flowerpot

My life is complete 🥰 appearing now on my favourite radio station @BBCRadio4 in this new documentary “The Cost of Economic War” with @DuncanWeldon Alongside some stellar #sanctions experts @nat_tilahun @reziemba @dandrezner & fantastic producer Jac Philmore @IHEID

While waiting for the 'grand regulatory moment for economic sanctions' as @jbentonheath & @ElenaChachko put it, a few of us did the intermediate job of preparing a humanitarian checklist to inject some ethics on sanctions. ahsrproject.org/2024/10/08/a-m…

So many of our immigrant families and friends in US who were scared to death of DJT’s first arrival in 2016 now voted for him - and the lesson we take 8 years later is still a version of the ‘deplorables’ story?! Not even rampant inflation? Or wars? Or Dem complicity in Gaza…

I'm glad Trump is on track to win the popular vote so people don't attribute his win to the Electoral College. He won for one reason: most Americans genuinely want their President to be a racist, misogynist sex offender who was impeached twice and convicted of 34 felonies.

Some staggering stats on sanctions

NEW: THE STAGGERING RISE OF AMERICA'S GLOBAL ECONOMIC WARFARE 1st in a series @federicacocco & I found: 1. ~1/3 of all nations on Earth now face some form of US sanctions. Huge increase from when mostly applied to Cuba & a handful of regimes 2. +*60%* of *all poor countries*…

In the essay's final sections, I turn to work by @obioraokaforc @nat_tilahun @LeclercqDesiree & work on humanitarian norms (h/t @ScottTPaul) that help us think about what "new" norms for neutrality in economic warfare might look like. See also: x.com/nat_tilahun/st… 10/n

The Mogadishu government asked Ethiopian troops to leave, thinking they'd comply. Instead, thousands more Ethiopian soldiers entered Somalia. Their message: we are here for our national interests and there is nothing you can do. thesomalidigest.com/more-ethiopian…

Hello Friends, I am sharing a link to my latest piece with Dr. @nat_tilahun in the Yale Journal of Int'l Law -- Third World Approaches to Int'l Law & Economic Sanctions “Humanizing Economic Sanctions? Lessons from Int'l Humanitarian Law” yjil.yale.edu/humanizing-eco… Cc: @YJILonline

Out of the UK 🇬🇧 for a few weeks and came back to see some of the familiar consumption items on supermarket shelves increased price by at least 15% - don’t see where the supposed ‘inflation coming down’ is happening.

Today the House votes on a bill that would push millions of Yemenis deeper into crisis. While the bill is called the Standing Against Houthi Aggression Act, it does little to punish the Houthis & instead would hurt the most vulnerable Yemenis. Here's why:

Very much looking forward to speaking at the ASIL roundtable this Thursday in DC, alongside highly esteemed scholars and practitioners on sanctions.

This coming Thursday! Our ASIL roundtable on Sanctions and Interdependence: Human Rights Implications. With @solgmunoz, @nat_tilahun, Scott Johnson, Javaid Rehman, Amanda Strayer, and me.

Let that sink in! Some 600 years of peaceful, rotating power transfer

Ethiopia as a state could learn some valuable lessons from the Gujii Oromo about the value of the rule of law, in this case, respecting the rules of peaceful power transfer, i.e., term limits! The Gujii has been doing this for some 600 years. Truly impressive!
