Last year, I was honoured to spend a day at the Royal Anthropological Institute with an intellectual hero of mine, Orlando Patterson, discussing this important new work of his, which is out today.
Elevator pitch: president Shawn Fain.
You know who could be an interesting progressive candidate for president in 2028? Greg Casar.
When I titled my book "Democracy May Not Exist, but We'll Miss It When It's Gone" I really did not anticipate how hard that phrase would eventually hit.
We do not have an inflation problem now; we have a housing problem, and that's been true for over a year.
"The index for shelter rose 0.4% in October, accounting for over half of" the inflation measured by @BLS_gov
Wow, Vivek Ramaswamy comes out for defunding Veterans' health care ($120 billion). He wants to defund the $516 billion spent annually on programs with expired authorizations, and that's by far the biggest one (expired since 1998). cbo.gov/publication/60…
We shouldn’t let the government spend money on programs that have expired. Yet that’s exactly what happens today: half a *trillion* dollars of taxpayer funds ($516 B+) goes each year to programs which Congress has allowed to expire. There are 1,200+ programs that are no longer…
Have been fighting an uphill battle since 2021 trying to make the Democrats and economists realize that a) inflation is dangerous even if transitory, and b) the government can fight inflation without pushing people into unemployment. 6k words reflection with @sunraysunray
The first freedom is the “freedom to move away” (but I’ll keep this account too, so I can oscillate - seasonally? - between them)
MMT has always been about centering inflation risk in the federal budgeting process. If you're not rigorously evaluating major legislation (tax or spending) for inflation risk (and mitigating that risk preemptively), you're not implementing policy in accordance with MMT. Start…
Trump has now reaffirmed his plan to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. For the record that department funds, among other things, all the special education and special needs program in public schools and public colleges in all 50 states.

The best defense against inflation is a good offense.
Unemployment weakens governments. Inflation kills. The politically destructive power of inflation had been forgotten. Standard policy tools left us unprepared and fueled inequality. The re-election of Trump should serve as a warning to all democrats. My first @nytopinion 1/

“That Democrats aren’t trusted on the cost of living harmed them much more than any ad. If Dems want to “Sister Soulja” some part of their coalition, start with the parts that have made it so much more expensive to build and live where Democrats govern.”
A few thoughts from the conversations I’ve been having and hearing over the last week: The hard question isn’t the 2 points that would’ve decided the election. It’s how to build a Democratic Party that isn’t always 2 points away from losing to Donald Trump — or worse. The…
That was a cataclysm. Electoral map wipeout. Senate D practical ceiling is now 52 seats. R's is 62. Time to rebuild the left. We are out of touch with the crisis of meaning/purpose fueling MAGA. We refuse to pick big fights. Our tent is too small. 1/ Some early thoughts:
Democrats abandoned FDRs vision for universal economic security in favor of "targeted, temporary, and timely" programs that require the already insecure to run the bureaucratic gauntlet to receive a modicum of support.
Most economists still cling to some variant of the Phillips Curve and hence will never agree with this, but @IsabellaMWeber is correct. And I would add that we could have done it without a single rate hike.
No, the public did not want more unemployment and less growth to get lower inflation. They would have wanted it all and they could have had it all.
