As always, a fun reminder of how shit this place has become. Two weeks ago, reported a blatant slur. Just got a mail telling me that, on review, it didn’t break any guidelines. Good to know, Twitter. Keep up the good work of providing bigots a platform free of oversight.

Fall term starts today, classes tomorrow. I’ve been working on how to remind students about my classroom policy on AI for our writing skills class (simply, don’t). Fantastic essay by Ted Chiang helped out quite a lot.

This New Yorker piece by Ted Chiang on the limited value of current LLMs is fantastic (newyorker.com/culture/the-we…) - what I like best is its self-demonstrating quality. It is a piece of insightful writing of a sort our best machines are, at present, wholly incapable of producing.

I’m here for sports news and following friends. This morning, I see a post on standard right wing talking points being shit only outright Nazis would’ve said 5-10 years ago. The boosted blue check replies? “If you don’t like the 14 words, you’re the racist.” Why am I still here?

Food safety is paramount, but there are other ways to regulate it aside from driving small scale producers out of business. So many of Japan’s food production regulations seem to be based on creating barriers to entry and protecting the market share of larger companies.

We live in the hackiest possible science fiction novel, the kind that any reader with standards would set aside before finishing the first cliche-ridden asinine chapter. The kind that people hold up as ironic criticism until the author comes out and says it was all heartfelt.

Amazon converted a literal jail to an office. The conference rooms and private areas are literally jail cells. They literally work in prison cells

Wait til young Japanese people find out how much more they can make on a working holiday visa in a foreign country, or when foreign workers decide to work in other countries that actually pay workers a decent wage.

A government survey shows that Japan's youth are feeling especially pessimistic about their financials - as bad as during the 2008 crisis. According to the Japan Statistics Bureau, unmarried men in their 20s earn an average annual salary of less than ¥3,000,000 ($19,938 USD).

It’s awesome that I don’t feel like I can check trending topics in a public place (or at work) anymore, given how pretty much every post in them is spam, and porny spam at that. Almost like getting rid of whole teams that dealt with preventing that was bad, maybe?

It’s fun when @AmazonJP changes your delivery date without telling you, then makes it impossible to get in touch with customer service without their app. What’s the point of prime of “next day” shipping if it takes two days? So much for the things I needed to do tonight.

On a day when my waves resemble the gales of November, I ask... Does any one know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours? Rest in peace, Gordon Lightfoot, you will always have a place here. It's been good to know ya. 🙏🌊
