Worth every minute of your time.

Anyone heard of bicycle face? 🚲 (Thought I’d share my @SmithCollege graduation speech since it looks like I now have the option to tweet long videos 🧐)

Back to a 1 question format, but with multi-selects. Addition of MENA category. Default to asking for race details. Big day for data nerds.

For the first time in 27 years, the U.S. government has altered its approach to collecting race and ethnicity data. With the addition of MENA and Hispanic categories, millions of people will now see themselves better reflected in federal data collection! npr.org/2024/03/28/123…

While no one owes Harvard pity, we’d be remiss to not see this as an attack on higher ed, like ones in states like Florida and South Dakota (and and and…), laying the groundwork for ongoing dismantling higher ed — especially public higher ed, where states hold the purse strings.

Shh, don’t tell anyone but @elliotblake took the kiddos to see #PoorThings and between relatives visiting and everything, it’s the first time since 12/19 that I have been anywhere but the shower by myself. It’s me and the dog alone in the house and I am happy.

Apolitical is just a different kind of politics. The history of higher ed also tells us that none of what we are dealing with now is actually new. It’s just the latest buzzwords and right-wing talking points, all code for upholding white supremacy.

America’s top universities should abandon their long misadventure into politics, retrain their gaze on their core strengths and rebuild their reputations as centers of research and learning. My take:

What’s important to know about the efforts to take down university presidents is that the gentile right wingers involved see this as a point of entry to dismantle DEI initiatives.

Today I received an email from a faculty member that begins “taking that survey was fun”. My work here is done, people.

It’s time for my annual pilgrimage to the @Wilco online store to buy my honey more Wilco t shirts so he can continue to wear only shirts that support his favorite band.

The purpose of liberal arts education is not to build your career. It’s to broaden your mind. You don’t have to justify a major based on job prospects. The only explanation necessary is “it interests me.” The true value of college is improving your ability to think and learn.

Best advice from the panel: keep your students paid and keep them insured, because they eat and they get sick. Note we are talking about assessment. You can’t learn-much less perform-if you are sick or hungry. This is what “student first” really means.

I’m at a STEM conference and this morning’s session has seven panelists. Only one is a while male. So it can be done, y’all.

Just stumbled upon my Dean and a department chair, casually exchanging stories about the first theory that blew their mind once they understood it, as opposed to just reciting it. It’s the best endorsement of a liberal arts education ever.

Co-sign.
