So glad someone finally put this urban legend of organic chemistry to the test. Bottom line: MeOH DOES NOT dissolve silica, but granular silica can shed fine particles that elute. So choose your silica gel wisely if you plan to use dense (eg, CH2Cl2) solvent mixtures.
