Last year, 🇵🇰 was close to stopping polio, but 40 new cases this year threaten to reverse years of progress. Vaccine misinformation is one major obstacle stopping us from eliminating this deadly virus. Polio vaccines are safe & effective. Get your children vaccinated! #EndPolio
Germany reports first mpox case from new clade The case-patient recently traveled abroad, but few other details were given by the institute. cidrap.umn.edu/mpox/germany-r… Photo courtesy of NIAID / Flickr cc
Main take-away so far from very interesting presser on #Marburg outbreak in Rwanda: @nsanzimanasabin says all cases are linked to known infection chains. The outbreak is one major cluster with three branches.
Great to see that only three #Marburg patients are still in treatment and isolation in Rwanda. One more patient has recovered, no new infections or deaths!

"Will H5N1 become a pandemic virus? Anyone who insists it is inevitable is guessing. Anyone who opines that it will never happen is guessing, too" This piece on H5N1 uncertainty and public health communication from @HelenBranswell is absolutely brilliant.statnews.com/2024/10/16/bir…
At the @WorldHealthSmt, Minister @Xavier_Bettel reiterated 🇱🇺's support for the @WHO by pledging a contribution of 47.5 MEUR for the years 2025-28, including a voluntary contribution of 1 MEUR from @sante_lu This represents 🇱🇺's largest financial support to the #WHO to date.
Glad to see #mpox vaccines starting to be rolled out where they are needed the most…
🧵 On Seasonality: SARS-CoV-2 has "seasonality" as a contributor to transmission dynamics People often refute it - So I made graphs and this thread NOTE: Seasonality does NOT = "just a cold" Many of worst viruses have seasonality Transmission Dynamics ≠ Pathogenicity 1/
I spoke with @kakape about the Marburg outbreak in Rwanda. I remain confident in the country’s ability to manage this. But there are some very important questions we need answers to, and very very soon. science.org/content/articl…
Yesterday, Germany reported that two travellers returning from #Rwanda were isolated in Hamburg due to a history of exposure in a medical facility in Rwanda where #Marburg virus disease patients were treated. The travellers tested negative today. bit.ly/3XUytTJ

Every time there’s a Marburg or Ebola virus outbreak, my feed instantly fills with filovirus fear porn. It’s airborne! Deadliest virus ever! OMG IT’S IN EUROPE! Pandemic imminent! These takes are at best wrong & at worst anti-scientific and racist. Here are some facts.
Despite the fear and scaremongering and numerous speculations regarding the #Marburg #virus, especially again in the social media, the diagnostics in #Hamburg could be carried out routinely as always and yielded a negative result. #MarburgVirus n-tv.de/panorama/Verda…
Rwanda announced 7 new #Marburg cases today & an additional death. So 36 cases & 11 deaths as of now. Most of these people are health care workers. Still no word on whether the two people in quarantine in Germany tested positive or not.

Five more people in Rwanda have died of the deadly Ebola-like Marburg disease, bringing the number of fatalities to 11, the health ministry said late last night.
As news of the Marburg cases in Rwanda spreads, I want to share some thoughts on where the outbreak stands, what will likely come next, and why this outbreak may (hopefully) end up being unlike other viral hemorrhagic fever outbreaks in the past 🧵
Today Rwanda announced cases of Marburg virus, a viral hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola. Rwanda has a strong health system with great leadership, and all indications are they are on top of this. The international community must offer support—not stigma—to aid in the response.
Does anyone have examples of antibiotic susceptible lineages of a pathogen over-taking an antibiotic resistant one?
The fact is that the evidence is only consistent with zoonotic origin. That doesn't change because a thirsty professional keynote speaker who hasn't been relevant since the 90s misrepresents the evidence base & sows doubt in the scientific method to serve his own agenda.
