✅Spring semester done. ✅Year one of the Ph.D. done. ✅Summer break activated. ✅Incomplete translation and writing projects restarted. ✅Newsletters restarted. And while we haven't planned anything yet, I'm hoping to manifest what's in the video below. Been a heck of a year.
A thoughtful discussion about Gujarati pulp fiction in Mid-Day (Mumbai) between translator Vishwambhari S Parmar and writer/editor Neerja Deodhar. I was asked to share some thoughts too.
Here's a Mid-Day article on our upcoming Gujarati Pulp Fiction anthology, featuring quotes from @jennybhatt and our illustrious translator Vishwambhari S Parmar: mid-day.com/sunday-mid-day…
Lovely to finally see all the winners of the 2024 PEN/Heim Translation Grant. I was one of the jury members (feels like a long time ago now), and it was a joy to read all the amazing translation submissions from around the world. Congratulations! pen.org/literary-award…
A new installment of 'Reading Historical Novels from Around the World,' featuring Flora Nwapa's trailblazing 'Efuru.' Free, no-spam newsletter. jennybhattwriter.com/hfcn-09-histor…
The Atlantic publishes a list of 136 best American novels; only 2 are by writers of South Asian origin (predictably so). The NYT publishes a list of the 22 funniest novels written in English; not one is by a writer of S. Asian origin. Y'all don't read or teach our books. *sigh*
It's spring break, so I have a little window of time to work on my writing and translation projects, including my newsletters. Here's #68 of WAAT with some initial thoughts on how we approach multiple translations, both as readers and translators. jennybhattwriter.com/waat-68-on-app…
Another day, another Devy quote. :) But, this time, with some sobering stats. Some work-in-progress for an upcoming conference. The Indian translation pyramid is alive and well. All the well-meaning awards and programs in the world only seem to exacerbate the situation, sadly.
Surfacing very briefly to share this lovely dedication by the legendary G. N. Devy. It's from 'The Being of Bhasha,' the introductory book of the multi-volume People’s Linguistic Survey of India series, which aimed to "document languages spoken in India’s remotest corners."
