Next semester I'm teaching (in English) a graduate seminar in sociology on contemporary Chinese society. l'll shamelessly use it to catch up on all the recent social science (and adjacent) books on China. I'd be deeply grateful for any recommendations!
Thanks so much to @kuokuomich and @albertowu for their wisdom and support as I wrote personally for the first time in a long while! A true privilege to appear in their latest Substack post:
"Being closeted is a skill ... It’s remembering who you’ve told what when and where." This wonderful essay by @jeffreyweng describes coming out—or as he puts it, fail to come out—in Taiwan, where an “undercurrent of conservatism belies its happy surface.” ampleroad.substack.com/p/forgetting-h…
Teaching a course on historical sociology for the first time this semester. Tentative readings: Weber, Moore, P. Anderson, Skocpol &c. Archival research final project. Anyone mind sharing past syllabi? Would be incredibly grateful for any help! #soctwitter #twitterstorians

I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of Professor Dru Gladney - I hope there will be an opportunity to mourn and celebrate him at #AAS2022, as he was scheduled to attend this week. 老師一路走好。
Dru Gladney kindly and generously agreed to be discussant for my panel (E04 Friday 3:30pm) at #AAS2022. Sadly, he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last week. My panel with @BennoWeiner will allow for time to remember him and the broad impact of his work

Honored this year to be joining my esteemed colleagues in sociology at National Taiwan University @ntu_sociology
We are excited to welcome Dr. Jeffrey Weng 翁哲瑞 @jeffreyweng to join us as an assistant professor. Dr. Weng got his PhD from UC Berkeley and was a Postdoc @StanfordSAPARC His research centers on the politics of language, ethnoracial formation, and nation-building in China.
Flattered. Thanks so much for this! 🙏
In the latest issue of the #European_Journal_of_sociology available online (61_2_2020), read @jeffreyweng "End of an Era: Transforming Language and Society in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, c. 1870-1950" @CUP_Anthro_Soc @INSHS_CNRS doi.org/10.1017/S00039…
Delighted to share a new article! In investigating the 20th-century creation of modern China’s national language, I found I had to trace the parallel stories playing out in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Grateful to have had the shoulders of giants to stand on doi.org/10.1017/S00039…
I'm delighted to share my latest article on language, social class, and nationhood, published in Theory & Society and now available online: link.springer.com/article/10.100…
En route to Leiden for #ICAS11. Come see my and @jeffreyweng’s panel “ Sounding Chinese: Evolving Notions of Nation, Language and Identity”!
