China just rejected an invitation by Taiwan to discuss a new way forward for cross-strait relations. The talks would have been on Taiwan-controlled territory. China doesn't want to talk unless Taiwan voluntarily surrenders its hard-earned sovereignty.

"On Tuesday, Straits Exchange Foundation Secretary-General Luo Wen-jia proposed that discussions between both sides of the Taiwan Strait could take place...in the Matsu Islands, Taiwanese territory located close to China's Fujian province." focustaiwan.tw/cross-strait/2…

Quoted by Nikkei: "China has always ... resorts to improper means to deal with other countries. Taiwan's diplomacy is always struggling to survive in tight spaces. It's tough, but it continually demonstrates flexibility and resilience." asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Inter… 來自 @NikkeiAsia

I used to like Oriana because we had overlapping research interests. However, over the years, the more I’ve read her works and statements, the more I feel she is not a scholar on China but a scholar from China.

a good read

In today's @nytopinion, I argue that there is a bipartisan consensus on China but that Trump is outside it. If he returns, he will again undermine it by putting self-interest first. That could cost the US the decisive decade in the competition. Thread and link below:

Democracies should not let dictators to dictate their own policies. So tired to see many countries still prioritize "not to anger China" as their policy. Xi Jinping is very satisfied with all these. theguardian.com/world/2024/oct…

Quoted in the report. Ko is trying to blame everything to DPP, which is the only way to unite his supporters.

NEW: #Taiwan’s embattled opposition party leader Ko Wen-je spoke exclusively to @NikkeiAsia after he was released from custody. Having risen spectacularly in politics, his woes appear Shakespearean. He talked about the probe, judiciary, defence etc. 1/7 asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks…
